Where can you find patterns to make ferret hammocks and beds?
We were just given a ferret, and she has a cage, but not a lot of toys and hammocks. I have seen on ebay where people sell these beds and hammocks that are homemade, and I was wondering if anyone new any websites with patterns. My grandmother is an excellect seamstress and I am sure she can figure out how to make these, but I would like to have a pattern just in case. Any ideas??
If your grandmother is as good at sewing as you make it sound, then I doubt she'll need any patterns. I made a few bedding sets for my fuzzies a few months ago and I hadn't sewn for close to ten years when I made them. All I did was look at the bedding I did have, used tagboard to make my own patterns, and then started sewing. They didn't turn out perfect, but they did look ok and they were usable. For someone with a lot more experience, I'm sure it would be much easier. Ferret Hammock Information You Should Know
Those lovable little ferrets are playful and very active. They scurry around, frolic and play all the time during their waking hours. They compensate for all this frenzied activity by sleeping up to twenty hours per day so their sleeping arrangements are very important to them. The two most recommended bedding methods for ferrets are sleeping bags and hammocks. Yes, that's right - ferret hammocks. Ferrets prefer to sleep in soft, dark and comfortable places and hammocks can provide all these amenities. They have the natural desire to be comfortable when they sleep. Beyond the comfort considerations if a ferret does not have adequate sleeping conditions that provide enough good sleep their health will be affected. If you are going to invest your time, money and emotion in a pet it is important to see that they are properly managed.
Another workable option for ferret sleeping arrangements is the ferret sleeping bag or sleep sack. As the name implies these are simple ferret sized bags that lay on the floor of the cage. They can be open ended or closed off on one end. The ferret will soon learn that it is a good place to sleep by snuggling up inside the sack. To add to the ferrets sleep satisfaction it should be in a comfortable, dark and confined spot in the cage. Insure it is placed properly and the ferret will take care of the rest.
The ferret hammock choice offers several advantages over the ferret sleeping bag or sack. After you get over the novelty of the idea of a hammock for ferrets you discover that it is not such a ridiculous idea. Just like regular hammocks the ones for ferrets are hung in the cage and the ferrets like them because it gives them a sense of security when they are ensconced in the hammock. Because they suspend the ferret in the air it helps to keep the ferret from becoming overheated and therefore contributes to comfortable sleep for the little animal. The hammocks come in many sizes and configurations. Ferrets are very social even when they sleep so some hammocks are large enough for several animals to sleep together. Some hammocks are equipped with steps and made of stretch material that will accommodate visitors.
Whatever option you choose for your ferrets sleeping accommodations the primary consideration is that it is machine washable. This is critical in being able to help in the prevention of disease. Ferret sleeping materials should be washed frequently. This will not only aid in keeping the cage clean but it will definitely contribute to keeping the animals healthy and happy. The material should be tightly woven because if it can easily become frayed and loose the ferrets will chew on it and could develop digestive problems. Once fraying begins the sacks or hammocks should be immediately replaced. Hammocks generally come with some type of hardware. It should be inspected for any hazards it may pose to the ferret especially since they like to gnaw on anything within reach.
Ferrets love hammocks because it allows them to sleep in a natural position and get more comfortable rest and consequently helps them lead a healthier life.
