Water Village – Tongli

Tongli, which belongs to Wujiang in Jiangsu Province, is located along the bank of Tai Lake and to the east of ancient canal with eight lakes surrounded; it is 80 kilometers away from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport in the east and 18 kilometers away from Suzhou in the north, adjacent to 318 National Highway in the south and Suzhou-Jiaxing Expressway in the west. The administrative district of Tongli town, after mergence of Tongli and Tuncun in October, 2001, covers a total area of 102.91 square kilometers and boasts a total population of 58,000 with 12 administrative villages, 1 aquatic product base and 6 community residents' committees affiliated. Tongli, formerly known as Futu, changed its name as "Tongli" in early Tang dynasty due to its luxuriousness, and the current name "Tongli(同里)" can be traced back to Song dynasty when people re-created the two characters of "fu (富)" and "tu (土)". The total length of rivers in Tongli towm is 5.14 kilometers, covering an area of 9.37 hectare with 13.9 square meters per capita; the total length of Shibo Bank is 6.04 kilometers, and residences by riverside cover an area of 54,600 square meters, 36.9% of the total residence construction area The planning of town revolves around water including streets, roads, markets and gardens, and boasts a successful and natural combination of water, roads, bridges, residences, gardens, etc, forming the unique views by riverside of Tongli ancient town. Numerous rivers and harbors bring Tongli with various and endless aquatic products. Tongli people like tea-drinking more than people in other ancient towns for the sake of water.

[Tuisi Garden]

Tuisi Garden was built from 1885 AD to 1887 AD. It is originally owned by Ren Lansheng. The name originates from "Be loyal to the emperor when serving the court and reflect upon oneself when retreating from the post" in Tso Chuan. Its designer Yuan Long took actions that suited the local circumstances of Jiangnan Region and finished the Garden in two years after elaborate design. The 9.8-mu Garden, simple and unsophisticated, quiet and elegant, is an area with typical architectural style of Jiangnan Garden in late Qing dynasty. Tuisi Garden boasts unique layout with a complete collection of pavilion, terrace, tower, porch, bridge, hall and house centered by pond as if these architectures are floating on it. The compact and natural layout, plants and sceneries of four seasons contribute to a clear, secluded and bright Tuisi Garden. Tuisi Garden, with the characteristics of garden of Qing dynasty, is a classic work of Jiangnan classical garden. Chinese landscaper Chen Congzhou regards Tuisi Garden as "Waterside Garden" inspired by "The wise find pleasure in water; the virtuous find pleasure in hills" of Confucius. The profound cultural connotation of Tuisi Garden, together with the long history of Tongli, makes tourists fall into reverie and enlightenment. In 2001, Tuisi Garden was listed as world's Cultural Heritage.

[Entertainment in Three Bridges]

For Tongli People, Taiping Bridge, Jili Bridge and Changqing Bridge symbolize disaster and trouble relief. After walking across the three bridges, children will become cleverer, old people will become healthier, young fellows will come across a meteoric rise of career or social position, and girls will become more beautiful than before. Bride and bridegroom will carry the a sedan chair and walk across the three bridges accompanied by drum music, symbolizing that they would remain happily married to a ripe old age.

The Tea House provides different refreshments such as smoked lima-beans, dried turnip, etc in addition to various black tea, green tea and scented tea, making tourists fall into another flavor. Accounting house and "tiger stove" are downstairs while an opera troupe is upstairs where visitors can enjoy Jiangnan Sizhu Classical Music, Xuanjuan, Pingtan, drama, ditty, etc.
