Traveling with a cat and ferret.?

I'm going to be traveling 10 hours with my cat and ferret. I've had them both in the car before but never for that long. The cat stays pretty calm for the most part but I'm worried that after a while she is going to get antsy. The ferret usually just constantly tries to dig out of her carrier. What can I give them to calm them down to make it more peaceful? Also, I know that theyll need a potty break but since they both use the litter how am I supposed to go about doing that? Thanks!

You may want to ask your vet about some kind of sedative for the trip. You can use Benadryl with cats (and dogs) -- the dose is based on weight. That will keep them relaxed and sleepy, and might help with the anxiety on the drive.

Another thing you can try is a pheromone spray. I work at a vet's office/boarding facility and we use one called Feliway to help keep the kitties calm. Not sure what would work for a ferret, though -- again, you might want to check with your vet on that.

I'd suggest you keep each one in a carrier while you drive, and plan for rest stops every 3-4 hours. Fill a shoebox or cardboard box with litter (use a liner for easy cleanup) and let each one out at a time to wander around the inside of the car for a potty and stretch break. Unless you've got them trained to walk on a leash, you don't want to let them out to wander outside the car. Animals in an unfamiliar place can get spooked and bolt, and you wouldn't want them to run into traffic!!

Homemade Ferrets Cages

When it comes to having or choosing ferrets cages, there are 2 options made available for ferret owners – you can choose to buy a new one or make ferrets cages on your won. If you choose to create ferrets cages on your own, here are some simple tips on how you can get started with it:

• Use a medium to large dog or cat carrier. Get a small shoe box or litter box, but you have to make sure that it will fit into the cage. Secure the box to the back of your ferret cage using a couple of bolts and nuts or you can do this by drilling holes and twisting it in. get another litter box and fill it with litter, make sure that it is at least half full, and then nest the second box into the first.

• Next, gen 1 or 2 pairs of sweat pants or sweat shirts – make sure not to choose a gross pair but something you have worn once or twice and have not washed yet. You are after your smell on the clothing so you can use a used one or a clean pair. Place it on the floor of your ferret cage or if you are really handy, you may choose to buy a small hammock for ferrets and hang it from the slats to the top half of the carrier.

• Fasten a water and food dish to the door of your ferret cage. If you are able to set up ferrets cages in this way, then you can now bring it out to your ferret. Find a way to open the door so your ferret can easily get in and out of the cage. You may use a rock so that the door will not swing close. Your ferret will then voluntarily enter and sleep on its cage within the day. Make sure to check the cage from time to time and if you notice that your pet is sleeping in its cage, close the door as quiet as possible to avoid waking it up.

Ferrets are considered as one of the sweetest pet an owner can have, which is why more and more people decide to adopt or buy a ferret to keep as pet, even if it is illegal in some place. Aside from that, you should be aware that these creatures love challenges and so you have to be up for it if it is looking for one. Make sure to play games with your ferret where they can make use of their ferrets cages and it will be more familiarized with its own home.
