Float Flush

When you flush in an airplane, does the pudding disintegrate in the atmosphere or float into space?

no, it goes in to a fluid that freezes everything, sometimes planes inadvertently release it upon landing, and if falls to earth, it is what they call blue ice.

Thomas Crapper – Did He Invent The First Ever Flush Toilet?

January 2010 saw the 100th anniversary of one of the most influential plumbers in the history of toilets, Thomas Crapper. Yes, that was his name, and you'll find out later in this post whether or not that's where today's common term comes from. Many people claim that Thomas Crapper invented the first ever flush toilet; however it has never been proven. This article takes a look at the great man's career and whether or not we can credit him with one of the most widely used inventions in modern times.

Thomas Crapper was allegedly born in 1836 and died in January 1910. The Englishman was a plumber by trade and started training as one from the young age of 14 when he worked as an apprentice for a master plumber. By the time Crapper was 20 years old he was a master plumber himself and was highly rated in the toilet sanitization industry. He did work for numerous “blue blooded” members of the royal family as well as some of the richest people in London.

By the time Crapper turned 25 he had already started his own plumbing and bathroom fixtures company. It was during this time that he worked with the flush toilet(aka water closet as it was known back then). There is no definite answer as to whether or not he did in fact invent the flushing toilet, but it seems that the majority of people interested in the matter claim that he DID NOT invent the flush toilet, but rather improved upon the original design into something that bears a closer resemblance to what we use in modern times.  Research does however state that Thomas Crapper was awarded 9 patents between 1881 and 1896, the most notable one being for the “floating ballcock” which is still used today to stop the filling of the toilet flush water once the tank is full.

It is thanks to the innovative mind of this plumbing genius that we do not even have to worry about what happens after flushing a toilet in our daily lives. Portable toilet hire is even a possibility these days thanks to the innovative motion put in place by Thomas Crapper.

People claim that the pioneer of flushing toilets was knighted for his contribution to the sanitary industry; however this is a myth that has already been busted. “Sir” Thomas Crapper is simply an assumed name which came to be simply because Crapper did a lot of work for the royal family.

The final myth surrounding this man is regarding his name and it's similarity to the commonly used term “crap”. Unfortunately, Mr. Crapper, as with the flushing toilet, can't even be credited with the bringing about of the word crap. The word apparently originates from the old English and Dutch translations of the word “Chaff”.

Either way, we have a lot to be thankful for from the great Thomas Crapper. Thanks to his innovation, we are able to go about our daily tasks without having to worry about taking care of our “business”. Flush toilets have definitely made our lives MUCH easier.
