Chrysler Inboard / Outboard Fresh Water Intake Problem?
I have a 1973 Chrysler commodore 2 cabin cruiser with a 318 v8 chrysler inboard engine. I just bought it. I put it in the lake and the engine runs great but the water was not flowing through the system. We have hooked the hose up to it and ran it on land and it worked fine. I am new to boats, am I missing a prep step to get the water pump going or is the pump broken? or any other issue? How can I check to see if it is the water pump?
What you have is really a Volvo-penta with a chrysler name on it.
Volvo never had a water pump in their stern drives, but rather a big (jabsco) pump driven by a pulley on the front of the engine. If you had the volvo engine as well that pump would be driven off the end of the cam shaft. Their weak link with the world was they ran the vacuum of the water to the engine thru a water manifold bolted to the lower unit right below the exhaust bellows. This had a flat rubber washer with an "o" ring that had to hold back the air and only get water from the lower unit.
All that water went thru an "S" hose around the exhaust and U-joint bellows to a fitting on the transom mount.
The other side of the transom mount (inside the boat) had a large rubber hose to the inlet of the belt driven pump.
If any of that leaked air it would not work.
The pump impeller can be serviced from inside the boat and the impeller is readily available from any marina. The intake manifold gasket is usually an order item. Lots of people with this system replace the large black rubber line with a stiff clear "swimming pool" line so they can see the air bubbles when they occur.
You can also tap the line for a garden hose so you don't need the awkward flush attachment.
