My ferret won't eat, what should I do?
I have a ferret that is over 3 years old and has a history of adrenal gland tumors. She also ate some carrot and needed to have her stomach purged last year. This prevented her from eating as well. I've been feeding her 9 ml of Hills Feline Perscriptive Diet A/D twice daily. She has recently stopped eating her diet of Sheppard and Greene Ferret Food adult formula. She will, however, eat Ferret Bites (peanut butter ferret treats) readily. The container says only 1-2 T per day though. I find it strange that she will eat hard food, just not her pet food.
I cannot afford to take her to the vet and have tests done. I am specifically trying to find a way to have her start eating on her own again so that I don't have to force feed her by syringe every day.
Any ideas?
Take some of her kibble and soak it in hot water for about an hour, then blend it and add some A/D to it. Give her a bowl of it and she should love it, especially if she likes the A/D. I don't feed my two sugary things like Ferret Bites, but if you can, you can crunch those up and add them to the soup, too.
My guess is that something is medically wrong with her- sometimes they just aren't up for eating, and just eat the treats because they love them sooo much! The soup should at least get food into her belly until you can get her medical help.
Once she's feeling better, if she still refuses hard kibble (they would rather eat yummy soup than hard kibble!), just blend less and less and keep putting less water to make it chunkier until she's eating hard food again.

Ferret Colors And Markings
Ferrets come in all sorts of colors and patterns. Here we will take a look at some ferret colors and markings.
Colors can range from a pure albino white to a deep sable black. The way these colors are distributed through the ferret's coat and the markings on his face, or the mask as it is known, determine the type of ferret you have.
On a point or Siamese ferret the tail and legs will be darker than the rest of the body. They will have a V shaped mask which can be lighter or darker than the body although lighter colored ferrets, like the champagne, may not have a mask at all.
Panda markings will mean that whatever color your ferret is, unless you have an albino or dark eyed white, he will have a white head and neck and maybe rings of color around the eyes. He may also have other white markings on their feet and tail tips.
Similar to the panda is the blaze. Fuzzy will have a white face, neck and bib but from the forehead to the shoulder he will have a white stripe rather than being all white.
If your ferret has mitts that means he has four white feet. Mitts can occur on any ferret so there are no specific markings on the mask or anywhere else on your fuzzy.
A roan ferret will have a mixture of white and colored guardhairs, usually about 50-60% colored and the remainder will be white. These are spread throughout your fuzzy's coat and can happen in any colored ferret.
If your ferret has polecat markings it will have a dark body with a white or cream face and a dark band around the eyes, like a bandit mask.
Hooded ferrets are similar to polecats but the colour extends from the eyes and over the head into the body of your fuzzy.
Solid ferrets have a uniform color from head to tail. If you have a black sable solid it often looks like a mink.
If you are choosing a ferret for it's color be careful. Ferrets change color for a variety of reasons. Seasonal moulting, age and sex may mean that your fuzzy goes through a multitude of colors in his life. It is always best to choose your ferret for his temperament and personality rather than on his color alone.
