Hikari Wheat
mbuna cichlid feeding question?
i have demasoni cichlids which are more of a true mbuna and thus are vegitarians. i know that they should be eating a low protien diet to prevent bloat. there are two food options i have. hikari gold which has a 30% protein but the protein is meat based (fish meal). the second option is haikari excel which is a vegetable based protein (wheat meal) but its 35%. should i go for the lower protein meat based foor or the higher protein vegetable based food.
I have 12 african mbuna cichlids and I give them tetracichlid brand flakes they like them a lot. Also try brine shrimp, even though they are high in protien they are good for a well rounded diet if given as a treat. Also try hikiri gold cichlid pellets as a treat as well(soak them in a cup of water then smash them agenst the side of the cup so they will sink then put the in the tank). Another thing, a lot of people say give them lettuce, DO NOT give them lettuce, not only will it contaminate the tank, but also the chemicals that are put on the lettuce are questinable for human consumption but are extremely deadly for fish. Hope this helps good luck. Enjoy your mbuna cichlids they are awesome.

low protien question for vegi eating fish?
i have demasoni cichlids which are vegi eaters and suseptable to bloat. ive been recommended to feed them low protien food to prevent bloat and ease the digestion. i was looking at hakiri pellet food that has a 30% protien but contains meat like shrimp etc.. and they also have a new hikari excel that has 35% protien but is primarily wheat meal. so do i go with the lower protien food with meat products or the higher protien food made of all veggies
Well, I'd suggest you get the vegetable material pellet, and here's why.
Vegetarian, or cichlids that are predominantly herbivores require algae as a base food source, and even the algae can be high in protein. In many cases, spirulina based foods have a fair amount of protein, just sourced from non-animal product. You're best off going with the veggie based foods that offer a lot of fiber with the associated high protein content. Fiber is the real important thing here for pushing bloat related complications along.
As a side note, regardless of what food you choose, you should be supplementing that diet with things like slightly cooked shelled peas, zucchini, romaine lettuce leaves, etc. These foods are low protein but really high fibre, so regardless of what protein you get from the pellet diet, it will help push it through the digestive system. Also, the vegetable matter helps to bring out their ideal natural color, which is the reason we keep big cichlid tanks in the first place! Finally, you can get algae wafers that you can swap out for the pellet food every couple of days to break up the diet pattern. Hope that helps!
