How long can a mini aquarium reef be neglected for?
w/ automatic feeders, timer etc etc ; im just wondering thats all
not long as the water parameters will change, the fish will be fine with auto feeders for until they run out, but the water parameters will change due to evaportation, loss of chemicals, etc...
So not longer than 2 weeks at most without alot of damage.

Setting Up A Mini Aquarium
All fish, even fish as easy to breed as goldfish, need a proper aquarium to live in. Though it might be a common misconception that one is capable of breeding goldfish in a bowl, it really is not the right way to breed live fish. The popularity of goldfish bowls began centuries ago when it was costly to have a proper aquarium but these days it is relatively cheap to buy a small fish tank complete with the important accessories that it needs. A properly equip aquarium will ensure that your aquatic life live a healthy and long life.
There are three important accessories that every aquarium especially a small aquarium needs are a aquarium filter, lighting and a heater. These accessories function by simulating the original environment from where the fish came from, giving them the highest chance of survival. Healthy fish will not only have vibrant colors but will also be active and great to look at.
Setting Up Your Mini Aquarium
Fish tank filters work by circulating the water in the aquarium and as well as aerating it. Generally, most filters provide up to three types of filtration; chemical, biological and mechanical. Mechanical filtration removes the large debris and waste from the water which are either produced by the fish or leftover food. Biological filtration is is the function of beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia into nitrite and once again into nitrate which lowers the toxicity level in the water. Chemical filtration utilizes activated carbon to remove traces of chemicals from the water. Having a filter that provides all three filtration types will provide you the maximum cleanliness of the water.
Lighting will not only beautify the fish tank, but will also provide light which is an important element that most fish will appreciate. Living in a dark fish tank does at times cause fish to lose their colorful lustre. It is also so great to watch them swim around, displaying their vibrant colors proudly which does tend to glow beautifully in the light. Having lights is extremely important if you plan to have a reef tank. Coral need light in order to survive and having no proper lighting will eventually cause them to fade and die. This is also the same case for an aquarium with plants in it. Plants need light to perform photosynthesis and will wither and die without a sufficient light source.
An aquarium heater becomes extremely important if you plan to breed tropical fish. Tropical fish originate from a warm climate and if the temperature reduces, it will reduce their life span. If you don't like the way a heater would look in your tank, you can always opt for a submersible heater for your small aquarium.
With all these accessories in mind, prepare before hand when you are ready to begin your small fish tank. It is always a great idea to buy them all at once so that they would be functioning at optimum levels when it is time to introduce the fish.
