Just to let you know parakeets are prone to fatty tumors. A regular seed diet is not good for them. Especially the store bought food. The people don't check it and leave it on shelves for like months when no one buys it. Try buying some human whole grains such as hulled millet, oat groats, spelt etc. and making it to his regular diet to prevent him from fatty tumors. Or you can do what I do. I buy Avi-Cakes for parakeets, lovebirds, and other small birds and just feed them that with some millet and fresh fruits and veggies.
Well, parakeets can basically eat any food that humans eat except avacado. It makes them sick and can kill them. If you're parakeets never eaten greens or any other food besides seed it will be sort of hard to introduce him to other foods. You will have to do it by putting it on a clip or something and attach it to the cage. Try starting off with some tropical fruits. They also enjoy their fresh foods wet, so be sure to rinse first and put greens into the cage while they are still dripping wet. They tend to love that the best. Here's a list of foods parakeets can eat:
carrot tops,
sprouts,
strawberries,
kale,
apples,
brocolli,
and most dark, leafy greens
melon, corn-on-the-cob
cooked rice
beans
small portions of well cooked meat
DO NOT FEED YOUR BUDGIE:
This includes chocolate, coffee, soda, caffinated beverages, avocado, rhubarb, and the area of pitted fruits which touched the pit. Many fruit seeds are toxic to birds, so to be safe always remove any seeds from fruits you give to your budgies. You should also avoid giving your budgie anything but limited amounts of milk based products, as birds are lactose intolerant. Also, do not feed your budgie anything but very limited amounts of anything considered to be junk food (ie chips, fried foods, sweets, white bread, etc).
P.S. You should check out the link for budgie information I posted below. It will help you alot.

Taking into consideration a Pet Bird? Ask Oneself These 7 Crucial Questions
Birds can make fantastic pets and companions and there are several distinct birds to choose from. Two of the most popular are cockatiels and parakeets. Cockatiels and parakeets make great pets that only demand easy every day care. They don't get up a lot of area, they consume little quantities of meals, and they don't call for a every day stroll exterior. They really like becoming all around individuals and typically want out of their cages just so they can be closer to you. Some even discover to talk.
You're not on your own in contemplating a pet bird. In reality, according to the American Pet Goods Makers Association (APPMA), birds are the third most well-liked pet behind cats and dogs.
It all seems great doesn't it? Sluggish down a tiny bit, prior to you rush out to buy a cockatiel or a parakeet, get some time to assume about no matter whether or not you are ready for a hen companion. There are a number of things for you to think about ahead of you choose if you're ready for the tasks that arrives with parakeets and cockatiels.
Do by yourself a favor and don't purchase a parakeet or cockatiel until finally you ask your self the following questions:
Do I have ample persistence for a bird? Cockatiels and parakeets are social animals and they like focus. Am I a neat freak? All birds (not just cockatiels and parakeets) can be relatively messy. You're most likely going to have some feathers and hen seed to pick up close to the cage.
Can I care for my fowl effectively? You're taking the right initial step by hunting for details about birds. It's essential for you to know all of your cockatiel's or parakeet's needs just before you deliver him or her house.
Don't make the error of assuming that given that you previously have a dog, cat or some other pet, that you know how to take care of a hen. Birds have really diverse requirements than other pets. I'm afraid it's a tiny much more difficult than sticking your fowl in a cage and giving it water and birdseed.
Do I have area in my residence for a hen cage and other 'bird accessories"? You require to believe about exactly where you're going to location the cage in your house ahead of you walk in the door with it. And bear in mind, the bigger the chook, the bigger the cage. (Be certain to examine the do's and don't of cage placement. There are places in your property that are extremely hazardous for your fowl.)
Do I have the time to give my fowl what it requirements? In addition to the time you need to invest with your fowl giving him or her interest, you need to invest some time preparing meals for your bird. A appropriate diet plan for a nutritious cockatiel or parakeet includes refreshing greens and fruits - not just seeds.
Precisely what type of bird (and how several) do I want? Determine regardless of whether you want a female or a male hen. Perhaps you would like to have a pair of birds so that you can breed them. It's less complicated to believe by means of these varieties of issues now instead of waiting until you're talking to a breeder.
Am I all set for a prolonged-term commitment? As I said over, it's not unusual for cockatiels to reside 15-twenty years and parakeets can live 12-14 a long time. Obtaining a pet hen is a extended-expression dedication. There are by now too numerous birds in rescue and adoption centers.
Pet birds can carry a good deal of entertaining and happiness into your house. If you don't know what to count on prior to you bring a single house, you might be in for a shock. Nevertheless, if you've gone by means of the checklist previously mentioned and made a decision that you're prepared for a new feathered loved ones member, then congratulations! Get prepared for a long, loving and content relationship.
