My Parrot depressed?
Hi, well today I was playing with my 3 birds, I have 2 cockatiels and 1 smaller parrot, and I noticed that under my parrots wing, it looked like he ripped a chunk of skin off! I'm so scared!!! I'm not sure if his depressed because I heard that birds that eat themselves are the ones that may feel depressed, but yeah I'm not sure what to do with him... it seriously looked like he was ate a part of himself or something! I'm definetly going to take him to the vet.
What kind of parrot is it? Quaker parrots are known to inflict damage upon themselves like this, though I'm sure other parrot species do this.
Once you have ruled out a medical problem (because believe it or not, some birds will pull their feathers or harm themselves when they are sick) you can determine this is a behavioral problem.
Does your bird have enough mental stimulation? How many toys are in his cage? Do you rotate the toys out, change them frequently to keep it interesting for him? You may also want to hide some of his food in various places in his cage...this will encourage him to "forage" for his food and keep him busy. Parrots in the wild spend up to 80% of their time searching for their food. This will stimulate that instinct in him. Begin this process gradually of course.
Your veternarian will have other suggestions to help him keep busy in his cage if he doesn't have a health problem.
