Nuisance Pond Algae - How To Get Rid Of Them
The bane of pond owners everywhere, nuisance pond algae is a problem that consistently comes up. Ponds cost a lot of money to set up, so does the necessary equipment that comes along with the hobby. Then an algae bloom come along and ruins everything. Now the pond is this giant mass of green. What do we do? Lets identify the culprits.
Nuisance pond algae can be classified into three groups. They are phytoplankton (microscopic algae), attached-erect algae and filamentous algae.
Their spread is attributed to a number of things, of which excess nutrients are the prime suspects.
The next time you find yourself in the gardening section of a departmental store, take a look at the fertilizers they sell. You'll notice three letters, N P K on all of them. N is short form for nitrogen, P short for phosphorus and K short for potassium. These are the three basic elements that make up all commercial fertilizers.
But we're concerned with only two nutrients, Nitrate and Phosphate. To your aquatic plants and nuisance algae, these nutrients are fertilizers.
Therefore, it is important that we keep the presence of both nitrates and phosphates down to a minimum.
A few water changes are all it takes to reduce nitrates in smaller ponds.
Water changes are not a viable solution for very large ponds however. The first thing you want to do is clean the pond. Siphon out as much dirt, sludge, uneaten food and fish waste from the bottom of the pond. Clean up any dirty filter pads as well as your pumps.
Reduce feeding as well as the amount fed to your fish. Rotting leaves and debris should also be removed as they are a great source of nutrients.
Introducing aquatic plants gives nuisance algae some competition with regards to nutrient consumption. You can also use shade to your advantage, floating plants like water lilies prevent sunlight from reaching plant life in the water column or at the bottom. It is generally recommended to have 50 to 70 percent of your pond shaded by floating plants.
UV sterilizers are a very effective method to eradicate phytoplankton. Unfortunately UV sterilizers can be somewhat pricey.
Barley has been used with some success against nuisance algae. First used in Europe for centuries, its has become a common item in the pond hobby.
After submerging the barley into the pond, it will eventually release natural chemicals that are harmful towards most nuisance algae. It is completely safe for your fishes.
They come in three forms, barley extract (liquid), barley straws (bundles) and barley pellets. Not a most effective method at algae removal, they are cheap and there worth a try.
While algaecide usage is common in the hobby, i feel they should never be used. Since it is essentially copper sulfate, it is a poison and therefore, environmentally unfriendly to your pond ecosystem.
They are a short-term fix as they do not address the cause of nuisance algae in your pond. The cause of the problem is nutrients.
