sugar glider of ferret for a begginer?

i want to know which is more playful, ad more social, and will like me more if treated well.

i just got a sugar glider for an early Christmas present.

Sugar Gliders aren't as great as they seem.

They never come out of their pouch during the day
They have this oder (like sourish smell)
They take a while to get use to you
they have to have a lot of space
They are LOUD at night (don't keep them in your room!)
Be sure to get two because they ae very social animals and may end up with behavior problems with a buddy

Exotic Pets: Family Friends or Status Symbols?

Many pet owners in Northern Virginia are choosing to keep exotic or unconventional animals as pets rather than the usual cats, dogs, birds, or small rodents. While some of these pets make friendly additions to your family, others might be viewed as status symbols that do not make good pets because they require special care or simply because they will always be somewhat wild and dangerous.

So-called exotic pets are becoming more common in the Northern Virginia area, with some being sold at local pet stores today. There are a wide variety of possible exotic pets available. These include mammals such as hedgehogs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, and ferrets; reptiles from turtles to lizards and snakes; amphibians (which include salamanders and frogs), insects, saltwater fish, and corals. Although pet stores in Northern Virginia offer many of these creatures, it is recommended that you either buy your exotic pet from a reputable breeder or that you adopt one from a rescue group, which will ensure the animal is a good fit for your family. Remember, hiring a pet sitter to take care of  your dog  or cat  while you are on vacation is easy, just be sure you have a pet sitter that is willing to take care of your exotic pet as well; that snake might be a little scary!

 If you decide you would like to add an exotic pet to your household, spend time researching the specific needs of the animals you are considering before you make your final choice.

Consider the following factors as you decide whether or not an exotic pet is right for your family:

 Size: of pet and of housing requirements.

Legality: in your state and community.

Social needs: including amount of daily attention needed, type of companionship needed, and compatibility with children or other pets already in the home.

Cost: for initial purchase, for food, for health care, for possible destructive behavior.

Information: including diet and care requirements and also local vet(s) that are familiar with this animal. Will your neighbor or pet sitter care for the pet if you go away?

Activity level including how active and/or destructive the pet will be and WHEN it will be active!

Eliminating Bird Dust--3 Ways To Get Bird Dust Out Of Your Air

Bird dust can seem all but impossible to control. Some parrots like African Greys, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels are more prone to producing this white, powdery dust as a natural part of their growth and development.

Since this dust can carry all kinds of other particles including bacteria and viruses, it's a good idea to minimize the amount in the air, thus the amount you and your bird inhale. Here are 3 ways you can keep bird dust out of your environment healthier for you and your bird.

Research Bird Species--All birds are not created equal when it comes to the amount of bird dust they produce. The production of this dust that can be so irritating for us helps birds like the African Grey, Cockatiel and Cockatoo maintain healthy wing structure.

If you have not already fallen in love with a particular bird, do a little research on birds that produce less dust. There are many parrots that are less dusty such as Macaws, Amazons, Lorikeets and Budgies to name a few.

Clean the Cage Regularly--Frequent cleaning of the cage by removing soiled paper, damp mopping the inside of the cage, and cleaning the area around the outside of the cage will help reduce the dust, feathers, and dander. Cleaning the cage regularly will also make the bird room a nicer place to be.

Clean air will help keep your bird's air passages from becoming clogged by removing tiny particles of feathers and dust before they can be inhaled. These can clog your bird's air passages and cause respiratory problems as bacteria and viruses (especially psittacosis) attach to and enable transmission of respiratory diseases. Removing airborne particles of all sizes reduces that risk.

The dust, feathers, and dander are also present in the wild but they are able to dissipate into the air. In captivity unless you actively filter the air with filters that can trap these often sub-micron size particles, you and your bird are forced to breathe pollutants that get thicker each day.

Use an Air Purifier to Remove Bird Dust--An air purifier placed in the room with your bird is an excellent solution for removing airborne pollutants such as bird dust, and feathers, as well as sub-micron size particles like bacteria and viruses that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

The most effective type of filtration is HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filtration. In order to be categorized as a HEPA it must eliminate 99.97% of airborne particulates down to .3 microns in size.

Fortunately, it will not only remove bird related particulates but normal household pollutants as well. One of the perks of this kind of filtration is it won't just remove bird related pollutants. HEPA filtration will remove all kinds of airborne particulates as small as .3 microns including things like household dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, and pet dander.

Removing these pollutants while they are still airborne means both you and your family enjoy cleaner air, a healthier lifestyle, with more time to enjoy your bird, and less time cleaning.

What Not To Feed Your Pet Bird

This articles offers specific foods that you, being a bird owner, should never feed to your pet bird.  If you have questions concerning a particular kind of bird seed or fruit, consult your veterinarian.  Buy your bird seed from a reputable producer like ABBA or Kaytee and read about the native diets of your bird species and supply a diet that includes bird seed, fruit, and vegetables that closely resembles the natural food source of your particular bird species.    

Prior to investing in a bird as a pet, read and gather information on specific things to do and not to do.  There are numerous varieties of bird that, if cared for correctly, will be lifetime companions and family members.  

Every conscientious bird owner should know there are certain foods and certain ingredients that must never be fed to a pet bird.  Here's a list of six (6) food items that should not be fed to a bird or caution must be taken in the preparation of the food.  

1.  Chocolate, unfortunately, is absolutely not for the birds.  That wonderful candy bar can have disastrous consequences for your bird.  Chocolate is incredibly damaging to a bird's digestive system.  Initially, chocolate will cause vomiting and diarrhea.  It can then affect the central nervous system resulting in  seizures and eventual death.  Chocolate and food containing chocolate ought to remain well out of reach of your feathered friend.   

2.  Though fruits are without a doubt good for birds, there are actually types that should by no means be given to birds. These include apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and pears.  The reason is quite surprising.  These fruits have minute amounts of cyanide within their seeds which is an incredibly harmful and a likely lethal substance even in trace quantities.  Birds can eat portions of these types of fruit so long as it is cut away from the seeds or core.  Also, always clean fruit before giving to your pets, your children or yourself.  Damaging chemicals present in pesticides are often detrimental to small animals such as birds.     

Avocado is one fruit that should not be given to your pet bird.  Skin of the avocado may cause cardiac distress and heart failure in particular bird species. Better safe than sorry with the avocado so don't even bother letting them try it. 

3.  Certain kinds of vegetables are often harmful.  Onions may cause severe digestive problems and mushroom, which is really not a vegetable but a fungus, can cause respiratory distress, kidney failure and death.  While some veterinarians and pet owners are concerned about giving pet birds certain vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes, these vegetables are not unsafe if they are cleaned and sliced prior to giving it to your pet.  Remember, consult your veterinarian if you have concerns about any food source, including fruits, vegetables and bird seed.     

4.  Although you may like to have a few, never ask your pet bird if he or she wish to join you for a drink.  Alcohol depresses a birds organs which, in some cases, can be lethal.  Caffeine is incredibly harmful to birds also.  It causes cardiac malfunction in birds and, in some cases, could lead to arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, hyperactivity, and increased heartbeat.  Keep alcoholic and caffeinated drinks well from reach and from areas where your bird can access them.  Other than water, pure fruit or vegetable juice is good.  It can provide additional nutrition your bird needs.  

5.  Salt or products containing salt should not be given to birds.  Like in humans, excess salt often results in dehydration, kidney dysfunction, thirst and death.  Due to their small size, it does not require a large amount of salt to have negative affects.  

6.  Lastly, never give your pet bird dry or uncooked beans.  Dry or uncooked beans contain a poison called hemaglutin.  Hemaglutin is no longer a concern once the beans are cooked so if you wish to offer beans to your bird, cook them first. 

These are 6 food items that you need to avoid feeding your feathered friend.  Knowing and avoiding these and other damaging food items will help ensure they will live for a long time.  Pet birds can be very expensive.  Do not take a chance with your birds health by feeding it food that might be unsafe.  So what should you feed your pet bird to keep it fit and happy?  To play it safe, provide a good quality seed and pellet diet and supplement with approved fruits and vegetables if desired.  By doing this you will keep your bird healthy and happy.

Rat Chinchilla

Can any combination of- Degu, Rat, Chinchilla, Dwarf Rabbit, Guinea Pig- be housed together?

I am thinking of getting pets soon, in addition to my hamster. I have had other pets before now, and can take care of them, and am responsible, ect...
My question is, while I have had many of these pets listed (Degu, Rat, Chinchilla, Dwarf Rabbit, Guinea Pig) at one point or another, I haven't really considered housing different breeds together until now, so would any of those pets be able to live together? Thank-you

I wouldn't advise it really. Especially Degu and Rat. Rabbit, chinchilla, g.pig -- then maybe.

Apartment-friendly pets for everyone

Many people feel that they are limited in their choices for the pets they can own when it comes to apartment living. The pet shouldn't be too large, noisy, smelly, annoying, etc. However, people with this idea are not thinking outside of the box. Come on people! Expand that mind and just think about all of the small furry (and not-so-furry) creatures that could bring fun and joy to your life.

First, I highly recommend the sweet n' furry chinchilla. Although these creatures are quite small, they require a lot of space to run around (active little buggers they are), so make sure you have enough room to keep a large cage. These little bundles of joy are very playful and friendly, but don't generally like to be cuddled with or held for extensive periods. They can be a skittish if you get one when they're a little older, but can be trained into tameness. Since chinchillas are nocturnal, they'll wake when you arrive home and play with you. However, I would not recommend getting a chinchilla if you have small children or you don't want to turn on your air conditioner (a chinchilla needs to stay cool during the summer to prevent overheating).

Another one of my favorite animals for apartment living is the classic kitty cat. I am partial to cats because I like my independence, which is something they cherish also. That's not to say dogs aren't wonderful – they are super fun to cuddle with and make you feel happier when you're sad. However, cats have an advantage on dogs for apartment living as they are generally smaller, make less noise, and don't have to be let out to do their business. Another plus for cats: you can leave for a whole day and not worry that they're going to starve or pee all over your carpet.

Now bear with me on this one: I love rats. I know, it sounds nasty, but from every rat owner I've ever listened to, they are amazing pets! Despite the reputation of being dirty animals, rats are actually quite clean and affectionate pets. They are social animals, so having two of them (preferably the same sex) will keep them happy and provide you with entertainment! Rats are a little larger than mice, so they are easier to hold and with human interaction, they are sure to be a friendly critter.

On the flip side, a few pets I am personally not fond of (although I hear they make good apartment pets):

• Snakes (not because they're "scary", but because they eat my friend mouse and just lie there for the most part)
• Fish (they do not provide me with enough entertainment)
• Birds (so loud and messy, way too annoying for me)
• Ferrets (although they can be quite funny to watch, I've had personal bad experiences with one evil ferret…and they smell disgusting!)

Ferret...Sugar Glider...?

Which do you prefer as a pet and why?

I've had both! Well, all 3 since I bring the chinchilla's into this too.

HOW EASY TO TAKE CARE OF: Ferrets are about the same level as chins. Sugar Gliders are much more high maintenence than the other two, but if you have the time that should be no problem at all.

SMELL: I would rate the smell on the two of them about the same. Which is to say, quite high if you don't clean their cage and fur. Definitely higher than the practically oderless chinchilla's. My sugar gliders are well bonded so have no problems when I give them baths ((well the girl a little bit, but she's always a little fussy, the girls are harder to bond with)) and I could do the same with my ferrets when I had them. I use a special shampoo for them.

DOGS: My dogs are never in the room with the sugar gliders so I'm not sure how they would react. And I never had dogs and ferrets at the same time so I can't comment on that. But I have seen lots of pictures of sugar gliders sitting on dogs. It just depends on how mellow your dogs are and how bonded the sugar gliders are.

SPACE: Both require large housing units, but since you have a large house this shouldn't be a deciding factor for you.

CHILDREN/FAMILY: I believe ferrets are more child friendly than sugar gliders. But since you have teenagers I don't think that should be a deciding factor for you. As long as everyone in the family knows the basics on what to do/not to do with the animals that is.

INTERESTING FACTS: Got to say I don't know any about ferrets that can't be easily found. And the sugar glider community is so extensive and really try to let new people know everything so nada there too. The links below have "interesting" facts as well as basics. The forum is probabaly your best bet for interesting/cute stories/facts.

MY OPINION: I personally found the sugar gliders to be a more rewarding animal in the long run. You just put so much effort and time into them that when they are completly bonded it's amazing. As soon as my boy figures out I'm in the room he's out of the pouch, barking at the door to get out and jump all over me! It's just the cutest thing ever! And tent time! That has to be the most amusing thing ever. They just do the craziest things. Then again, I have had the suggies for 5 years and counting now and I only had the ferrets for 1. *shrugs*

Answering the Question - Is it Okay to Feed Your Ferrets Cat Food?

Ferrets are adorable pets that are very active and playful. However, due to lack of basic information about them, owners of the pet usually are confused about one question. Is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food? The answer is not entirely a yes or no. They are carnivorous and love meat, especially cooked. If you can find quality ferret food in your locality then there is nothing like it. However, cat food is good enough to provide them most of the nutrients they need, in case it is hard to find good ferret food.

If you are planning to feed your ferret with cat food, ensure that it has at least 30-35% protein content and 15-20% fat content. High quality protein content in the food keeps the them active and energetic. Kitten food is usually preferred for ferrets if you are unable to find traditional food. However, kitten food like kibble should be brown and crunchy. This also helps in maintaining the dental health of the pet. Crunchy cat food can also be given to them. However, soft cat food should be avoided.

Canned or dry cat food is almost as good as ferret food. But you should make sure the food is low in fiber, sugar and grains. The fiber content in the food should be less than 3% at all costs. Sweets and sugar content also prove harmful to them causing insulin related complications when they grow old. The food should be dry but it should not be soft. Dry diet is always more nutritious for the pet.

The other advantage of dry ferret diet is that it is more economical. It also lasts longer and does not get spoilt when stored. If you are wondering "is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food?" you need not be worried if you can ensure that the food contains some vitamin supplement as well. This allows for movement and also room for growth in growing pups.

The quality of your dog's bed is again not something to skimp on. It has to withstand your pup's tendency to chew, drool and claw without falling to pieces. You can tell just by looking at their long tails and bodies. If you are one of the lucky ones that owns a Chinese hamster you will notice they are around 10-12 centimeters when they are full grown. This still might confuse you a little and if that's the case just look at their colors. You will find that the majority of Chinese dwarf hamsters have a grayish-brown color with a racing stripe (black) down their spine. When you turn them over you will see that the belly is white. This is the predominant colors, although there are two other color mutations out there. These are considered "wild traits," which revolve around the dominate spot and the black eyed white version.

If you decide to purchase Chinese dwarf hamsters, don't make one of the most common mistakes out there today. See, even though experts will tell you that pairing up dwarf hamsters is a good idea, you want to purchase an individual Chinese dwarf hamster. The females are by far the dominate sex in this race and they will seriously injure or kill the males. However, if you are set on purchasing more than one we recommend choosing the same race and making sure they have enough room. You can do this by getting a cage that is more than one level, which will allow them to make a new home without worrying about the other hamster. We also suggest purchasing a plastic or aquarium tank as opposed to a cage. Getting stuck in a wire cage can be a traumatic experience for anyone, especially children. In the end the best option is two females. Just make sure you get them at an early age so they will have a better chance of getting along.

Feeding Chinese Dwarf hamsters are very similar to any other hamster. We recommend seeds and pellets or fruits and veggies. You probably want to give them treats here and there, but something like Cheerios will be just fine. Then again, we do know some owners who feed them things like crickets and mealworms. Whatever you choose, make sure they have a fresh water supply on a daily basis. The best option here is a plastic bottle so you don't have to clean the litter all the time.

Chinese Dwarf hamsters last about 2-3 years. Some of them you will be able to train or tame and others will not be able to be broken. Actually, most experts consider them to be more aggressive than most and extremely agile. When you see them jump for the first time you won't believe it. This is also true when they hop on their exercise wheel, because Chinese Dwarf hamsters are extremely fast. If you take the time to secure the cage properly, you won't have to worry about them trying to make an escape. In the end, if you're a beginner we highly recommend choosing another hamster. This is especially true if you plan on getting one for a child under 12.
