Medium/Large birds for on a large backyard?

Hey there, I am moving to a small block on the edge of town, and it has reasonably high fences, so I was wondering what is a good breed of bird that I can have in me backyard that will feed of my grass, and can have their wings clipped if necessary. I don't want chickens either.

The only "birds" that you could keep that would feed on the grass are Ducks or Geese.

Timid Parakeet?

I bought my parakeet about a month ago and he'll play around in his cage but whenever I try to get him out, he'll freak out and fly about and when I finally get him out, he flies to my shoulder and parks it there. That's fine and all but whenever a hand gets near him he'll make noise, open his mouth, and try to avoid it at all cost. I recently got him a play gym so he could have more out of the cage time but all he does it perch in one spot. Is there anyway to get him to relax?

well, you can put him back in his cage using your shoulder, you don't need to use a hand.
put millet and stuff on teh play gym and give him time there, if he sists there he should explore.
i hope you are not chasing and catching him to get him back inside.
he will find places outside the cage he likes eventually. putting him on them is a good start.

i hope if he is un-clipped and flying about you are smart enough not to have any hazards he can fly into. no cieling fans, clean windows or mirrors (they try to fly through them and break their neck, so put open blinds on windows, the kind with bars, or a very light curtian that is drawn but you can see thru it). no frying pans, open toilets or water. also they can fall behind furniture so move the furniture away from the walls so if it does fall back there, it can get out without getting stuck and breaking a wing. my dad had a bird break a wing like that way long ago. you can also put cloths or boxes on the area between furniture and wall.

my un-clipped cockatiel goes back in her cage by herself when i put millet in her cage, or just to eat her pellets or drink water, and that's when i close the cage.
she was kinda timid too at first and didn't know where to go outside the cage or even how to fly right. where you put the bird now is where he will fly to for the rest of his life!
it is easy with a timid bird, you don't have to worry about the thing chewing up all the wires in the room as soon as you turn around! he will just sit in "his" familiar areas nice easy bird.

that cage is fine for the conure, but since wales parakeets tails are too long fr this one, it will cause the feathers to looked disheveled and dirty. but for a conure it is fine, i actually have a larger parrot that is in an almost excat cage as the one you are describng.

Wild Bird Seed for Backyard Use

Wild bird seed for our backyard use will entice more birds to our feeders. This bird seed can consist of a number of assorted seeds that will attract some unusual wild birds that come to our backyard. Many homeowners are enjoying bird watching today than ever before. We can use a few wild bird feeders and place different seeds in each one to invite more varieties of birds.

The seeds used depends on the type of birds we would like to see. Once we know what birds like which seeds we can determine how we want to use our birdfeeders. The following is a list of some of the seeds and which birds enjoy them for your convenience.

Black-oil sunflower seeds are considered as the number one best seller. Black-oil sunflower seeds are high in protein due to the amount of meat it contains. The outer shell is very soft for the smaller bird to handle. Our winged friends that enjoy this sunflower seed are the chickadees, finches, goldfinches, and nuthatches. The high oil content of this seed will keep the birds dry and warm in the cold winter months.

Striped sunflower seeds are not as popular as the black-oil seeds and are cheaper to purchase. The smaller birds usually find it harder to crack the harder shells of these seeds. The wild birds known to like this tougher seed are the blue jay, cardinal, and woodpecker.

Cracked corn seed is usually used to attract the larger bird species. Those that enjoy it are the eastern bluebirds, jays, pheasants, and some game birds. Using cracked corn all year in one of your bird feeders will probably attract some birds that do not use some of the other feeders. Living in Southern California as I do, the smaller birds will eat everything except the cracked corn.

Millet is a large part of wild bird seed mixes because it is tiny and round. This feed is used is tubular feeders, hopper feeders, and tray feeders. Some of the backyard birds that enjoy millet are quail, juncos, sparrows, doves, buntings, bobwhites, and cardinals.

Thistle seed is a tiny black seed that is imported from Ethiopia and India and is also known as Nyjer seed. These seeds are so small it is better if you use them in a feeder that has wire mesh surrounding it. Some of the species that enjoy Nyjer seed include the house finch, purple finch, and goldfinch.

Safflower seeds are large seeds that have a white coating around it. They are often used instead of black-oil sunflower seeds because they will not attract the grackles, house sparrows, or starlings. The safflower seed attracts all the sames birds as the black-oil sunflower and will also attract the jay, titmouse, grosbeak, and cardinal.

Nuts that are used as bird seed are generally peanuts and peanut hearts. These nuts can be sold separately and are also found in some of the wild bird seed mixes. Some of the feathered friends that enjoy the nuts are cardinals, goldfinches, chickadees, nuthatches, mockingbirds, titmice, and woodpeckers.

Wild bird seed mixes usually consist of black-oil sunflower seeds, millet, striped sunflower seeds, and one or two other types of seed and they will attract most species of bird. They are available in most grocery stores, wild bird centers, and the wild bird suppliers at many pet centers.

General Information about Finches Cages

Cages come in many different shapes and sizes it is very important to pick a cage that suits the size and activity of the bird you're putting in the cage. Cages, either metal or wooden, are the most frequent cost-effective choice for housing finches.

Finches live communally and need room to socialize. They need a bit of Privacy for nesting as well as space for exercise. Brass cages (made of actual brass) are not recommended because of potential toxic qualities. Happy, unstressed finches have their cages or aviaries in quiet, low traffic areas of the house, office or classroom. Swings are an excellent accessory for the finch cage.

Since most stand-up cages are made for parrots and not small birds like Finches, it can be challenging to find stand-up bird cages that work well for Finches and other small birds. When looking for a Finch Cage, just keep in mind that you don't want bar spacing that's wider than 1/2" for your Finch. When setting up the cage or aviary for you finches is that they require ample room to fly around and they must be safe and disease free so the bigger the cage the better.

For a pair of finches the length of the cage should not be less than 30 inches. Toys in the cage are not needed but can be put in the cage if that's what you like. One thing they do need is perches. Dowel perches often cause feet problems so avoid them. Also, never use sand paper covered perches as they are harmful to your bird and offer no benefits. Rather choose nontoxic hardwood branches as perches.

Keep away from redwood, cedar or pressed wood chips as they are very poisonous to birds. As anything made of wood cannot be sterilized, after they are covered in droppings they must be replaced to avoid illness. Finches also like swings but both bird swings and bird perches should be placed out of their flight path and not over their food or water dishes to avoid faecal contamination.

Provide finch feeders for food and water, and dishes for treats and grit as well as an area for a bath. Set up a food dish and water bowl (made of non-toxic plastic or stainless steel) in the cage. Consider placing the containers on opposite sides of the cage to encourage flying and adequate exercise.

Set up a food dish and water bowl (made of non-toxic plastic or stainless steel) in the cage. Consider placing the containers on opposite sides of the cage to encourage flying and adequate exercise. Finches will appreciate a nest box to sleep in. You can attach a "bird protector" disk to the side of the cage to prevent mites. Place paper on the cage bottom that can be sprinkled with grit, or use a grit paper.

Although finches require very little time and effort to keep them, a clean environment as well as fresh food and water daily is a must to prevent disease and illness. The basic cage care includes daily cleaning of the water and food dishes. Every two to three days change the paper on the bottom of the cage and sprinkle it with about 1/8" of fresh grit. Weekly wash and dry the entire cage, including the perches.

Finches thrive when they have access to sunlight so place the cage near a window, and open it if weather permits. However, make sure they have also have access to shade if the cage is placed directly in the sun. If you are unable to provide them with natural sunlight, get a bird light and a timer to simulate day and night cycles.

How can you tell if a pet parrot is fat?

One of my African Greys is noticeably more filled-out-looking around the breastbone than the other and has quite an appetite. I'm not sure if he's too fat, even though he gets a high-quality pellet diet and plays on a birdie gym all day.

Does anyone know of a good method for telling if a bird is overweight?

Yes there is a method

feel around your birds body, on the front, and he may feel fat or chunky.

there is this bone in the middle of the chest if the fat around him is higher than that bone your bird is overweiight, the pellets, and fresh fruit make no difference, make your bird flap his wings and play rough to loose weight.

If the fat around your bird isnt above the bone, then he is fine african greys and amazons are naturally heavey bodied birds.

I have 2 african greys and other birds and make sure they not only get a great diet, but also flap their wings and exercise as well.

Finding the Right Gym for You

If you're a fitness enthusiast, chances are that a tame treadmill session at home is not your idea of a satisfactory workout. You are probably one of those who want to train with the very best and the very latest in fitness equipments.

If you are, then finding the right gym must be on your fitness regimen. Choosing a health club which can help you achieve your fitness goals is, by no means, an easy task. Here are some tips on how to choose a right gym which can be a perfect workout place for you.

Cost is probably the first factor that influences your decision in choosing the right gym. But rest assured you are not the only one.
