Spotting Dog Skin Allergies

Dog allergies of all kinds are just as common in dogs as they are in humans.  Dog skin allergies are one of the most common forms of allergies that you may experience.  Dog skin allergies are characterized by having your dog chew, lick and paw at her itchy skin, her eyes and nose may have some sort of discharge (usually a clear discharge) and there may be digestive upsets involved.  Skin lesions are another sign that your dog is probably suffering dog skin allergies.

What Causes Dog Skin Allergies?

All allergies are a result of our immune system being hypersensitive to some sort of substance (which is referred to as an antigen or allergen).  Dog skin allergies can show up at any point of your dog's life, though they tend to come about during the first five years of your dog's life.

The most common of the dog skin allergies involves dog fleas.  The saliva of dog fleas will often cause the area of skin where the bite occurred to become incredibly itchy and irritating.

There are also atopic dog skin allergies, which is the result of your dog inhaling some sort of substance that does not agree with their immune system.  These allergens are similar to the inhaled allergens that bother humans, such as dust, mold, dander, and pollen.  This type of allergy usually is noticeable when your pet is quite young (under 6 months in age)  The best way to try and stop atopic dog skin allergies is to keep your home and the area that the dog lives in very clean and well ventilated.

How are Dog Skin Allergies Diagnosed?

Where the skin lesions are present on the body will often help the veterinarian decide if your dog has a dog skin allergy or not.  Your veterinarian may also put your dog on some sort of a flea medication, and different foods may be tried so as to rule out whether or not your dog is having a dog food allergy rather than a dog skin allergy.  Blood tests and allergy testing may also be involved in more complex cases.

How do you Treat Dog Skin Allergies?

Unfortunately, allergies are very rarely "cured"; it's more a matter of trying to control them and to keep them in check.  Antihistamines as well as corticosteroids are popular ways to treat allergies, though some pet owners are also choosing "immunotherapy".  This type of therapy is a bit controversial as it is not guaranteed to work, though if it does, it will take up to 12 months to work properly.

Plus Cats Kittens

Which gets rid of fleas best? Frontline plus? or those flea baths?

Both cats in the house had fleas. I gave my cat frontline plus drops after spraying him and combing. The other cat a kitten at the time had them too and was given several bathes and combings. Both we thought had cleared up now it appears they are back. I told my roommate to give her cat drops also and I will give more to mine. Which method is proven more effective?? Please HelP!

I highly recommend Frontline Plus. Here is the thing, Frontline for starters is the least toxic and doesn't absorb into the bloodstream as other flea medicines do. Dips, baths, etc... typically kill of the adults, leaving the eggs intact and available for a hatching. Not to mention the chemicals used in a lot of those products are very harmful. Flea collars provide a fun hurdle for fleas, literally, they do nothing but give fleas something to jump over, and boy can they jump!

From the sound of it you over did it by spraying the cat and combing, it is most effective before the cat has had any baths (the oils in the hair folicals help the meds travel) and you never want to utilize more than one flea medicine at a time, to do so can cause serious harm to your pet. It also makes the Frontline a waste of money.

You are probably going to have to start over which sucks and is expensive, but by trying to go postal on fleas too quickly I find people tend to do far more harm than good.

One of my three cats has severe flea allergies. I have found due to the fact that flea eggs can survive up to two years in your carpet, etc... that you need to treat the house and the animals (all of your animals). I just had to do the following to my house and animals (keep in mind I live on the water with indoor only cats so the fleas have been quite a mystery).

My best suggestions are to either bomb or grab an inverted carpet spray (I personally have had the best luck, as have customers, with Adams). I do all carpeted areas, especially the base board/corners, and furniture (read all directions thoroughly). You have to treat the house too, if you don't, it doesn't do much good because fleas do survive a long time and they will also utilize you as a tool to do so.

When my house is done, during the same day I then treat my animals with Frontline, and de-worm them at the same time. You need to keep up on it (the flea medicine), but, it does work and quickly. Make sure to treat them monthly, and utilize the spray twice a year for your house.

The worst case I have seen was treated best with that method, it took approximately two years to completely eradicate the house of fleas, but it did work. It helps if your animals are indoors only as well.

Other flea deterrents that I have used and have had customers use in the past are lavender plants around the house or by doors, and cedar spread all around the outside of the house, and in the bedding of your pet bed (if you have one).

Good luck, give the pets a little break and try again. I haven't had anyone go wrong with this particular scheme yet, so if you can do it, give it a try.

Fostering Cats and Kittens

Cat or kitten fostering is a very rewarding experience for you and obviously the kitten involved.The benefit for yourself is, well, playing with kittens. Well that is just a side effect but it can be fun nonetheless. You are really doing a charitable service by fostering a kitten or a puppy for that matter.

Fostering is giving these poor animals a home, albeit temporary. There are multiple benefits in doing this.

For the kitten the most obviously benefit is living in a home and not a cage at some rescue center. The kitten learns how to interact with humans which will increase their chances of being adopted. Not many people want to adopt a kitten that cowers in the corner of its cage when a human approaches. If you have pets of your own, the kitten learns how to interact with them as well. Imagine someone looking to adopt a kitten but they already have a dog at home. If your foster home had a dog, this kitten has a better chance of being adopted by this fictitious person since they will be reassured that this kitten will get along fine with their dog back home.

Donations to rescue center as always appreciated but I bet if you spoke with one and asked what they needed the most I would not be surprised if the responded foster homes. You normally see this more in the spring when most kittens are born. You can even consider fostering a pregnant cat or one that recently gave birth I'm sure you could imagine raising your newborns in the comfort of your home is preferable then in a cage at a rescue center. also consider that a home would be a healthier environment then a rescue center which could have an issue with colds, viruses and even diseases. Even the best run rescue centers have these issues, it's just the nature of rescue center, similar to human hospitals.

We one had the chance to foster a few day old kittens who's mom had died in the birth. Sad as it was, we were able to bottle feed these little angels, watch them grown up healthy and find new homes. But fair warning, that was a lot of work as then need to be fed VERY often.

The negatives, well there are some but they are out weighted by the positives. One is costs, you obviously incurs some costs such as the cat food, litter boxes, cages to keep them from wondering around at night, and other miscellaneous cat supplies. But most of these are a one time investment and you could consider this as charitable donation in lieu of a donation to a rescue center (by all means do that as well if you can afford it). Though most adoptions should have a small 'fee' involved to help offset some of your costs. The fee is not about making a profit but using that money to help other cats

The other 'negative' is when they leave. You do get attached and might want to keep them for yourself. But realize that if you re-home them then there is now an additional space in your house to foster another. plus you should insist to be involved with the screening of potential adopters. Set up guidelines to follow, they are guidelines not absolute rules so use your best judgment. Ours were the following:

* No adoptions to give to someone as a gift - you want to be sure the person that is adopting the kitten really wants it. As a surprise gift, you can't be sure.

* No adoptions to someone who refuses to pay adoption fee - This is not about being greedy but let's be honest, if you can't afford a reasonable 'fee' then can really afford to take care of a pet in a proper way? way I see it is if you won't pay 100 dollars for the kitten you certainly won't pay for vet bills if the cat gets sick and needs medical attention...or most important, pay to get the kitten spayed/neutered.

* No adoptions to anyone that does not agree to spay/neuter the kitten. No exceptions!!

In summary, when thinking of actions you can do to help the creature of this world, i would strongly suggest you consider fostering kittens. It is a very rewarding experience and a great service.

To buy a frontline kit?

They have them where they sell them online (i.e- Ebay) It's where they give you one EXTRA large tube of frontline, and all the tools to and measurements to make them into smaller doses for my dog. (under 22 lbs) The one extra large tube will go for 6 doses for my dog. It's only about $20 as to, about $80-100 for the 6 month supply regular? Good Idea, or Bad Idea?

All you need is a syringe(w/o needle) & a vial to keep it in & buy a single tube. This is cheaper than paying for a "kit". This method will work for either Frontline or Advantage line.

Best flea and tick control?

My dog's breed is particularly sensitive to fleas and ticks. He's getting a vaccination for limes disease tomorrow. And I was just wondering what would be a good flea/tick control treatment for him?

Absolutely - when it comes to flea/tick preventatives there is no substitute for the good name brands like Frontline Plus or Advantix.
Don't even bother wasting your money on the cheap stuff you mention, does no good, neither do collars, sprays, shampoos - they just get rid of a few adult fleas, the eggs and larvae hatch, and your dog is infested again.

I use Advantix on my 5 dogs and any fosters I have every single month, we live in Florida where fleas never die, and my dogs never, ever get fleas or ticks. It is worth the cost to buy good preventative, believe me.

How to Select a Flea and Tick Control Treatment Plan For Your Pets

With over 200 species of Fleas and a similar number of Ticks found in the U.S. is no wonder they are your pets worst enemies. Further still, since they are so easy to attract and move from animal to animal so easily a strong program of Flea and Tick Control is imperative.

 Wading thru all the products and determining which one to use can be a daunting task. In order to do so successfully you need to start by asking yourself a few simple questions. You should write the answers down so you can compare the results when reading the manufacturers suggestions.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. Are you treating a dog, cat or both? There are different medications for each pet.
2. How old are they? Puppies and Kittens are usually treated differently and not with common products. They need to be over a certain age or you can’t treat them at all.
3. Are you treating for Fleas or Ticks? Sometimes the products will kill both; some however do not.
4. Are you treating the surroundings? If so the products you use are available but require other application properties.
5. Is this a program of Flea and Tick Control Prevention?
6. Does your pet have any known allergies to specific medications?

 Don’t let all this information scare you. These are the questions necessary to ask yourself so it makes the selection easy and understandable. No matter what manufacturer it is they all post the ingredients, benefits, dosage, precautions, comments, weight and age requirements specifically for use on a cat, dog, puppy or kitten.

Generally there are 8 different forms of Flea and Tick Control. This does not include all of the natural treatments and remedies that people use. Although not as widely tested, some pets cannot tolerate the chemicals in the normal courses of treatment. A natural treatment plan may be required for your animal and their surroundings.

This is a list of the different treatments available.

1. Flea and Tick Collars. They are available for dogs or cats. Depending on the manufacturer can kill all stages of fleas as well as adult ticks. There are specific collars for dogs or for cats.
2. Flea and Tick Spray. There are different sprays for each purpose. There are sprays used to treat the pets living and sleeping areas. There are also sprays for the yard and sprays are available to use directly on the pet as a once a month preventative treatment as well.
3. Flea and Tick Dips are used especially useful when your pet has serious infestations of fleas or ticks. Some also contain aloe to help with skin conditions, irritations and protect them from the sun.
4. Flea and Tick Shampoos are to wash the pets and provide good skin and fur protection from fleas and ticks. Use shampoo during a normal course of other treatments for added protection.
5. Oral doses of Flea medications are available for your pets. These kill fleas and infestations of fleas on dogs or cats within 4 – 6 hours.
6. Topical treatments are a quick one month protection application for your pets you apply to the skin directly behind their head on their back. This prevents them from licking the medications off the skin.
7. Area foggers for the inside of the home are available when you need to take more drastic action. They will treat up to 10,000 square feet and kill most pests including adult and pre-adult fleas, including flea eggs for 7 months, ticks, cockroaches, spiders, and ants. The downside is getting out of the house and the fact they are generally highly flammable aerosols. But if you need this massive approach they are definitely worth looking into.
8. Flea and Tick Powders kill them on contact. Use directly on the pets according to the directions or to cover areas of carpet to control the spread or lifecycles of the pests.

Responsible pet care is the most important aspect of preventing pet diseases. Flea and Tick Control is a major part of a good program of prevention. Making sure you have a proper Flea and Tick Control program in place to check your pets on a regular basis and the correct meds for prevention of infestation will keep them and their surroundings clear of these parasites.

Have a major American Dog Tick problem, how much does a pest control visit cost?

Not sure what category to ask this in... but if you have dogs like I do, you might know of a company that can do safe exterminating of ticks in the yard and house.

I use a company called Bulwark, but I'm not sure if they exist in your area since I don't know where you are from! As far as the cost, I believe most pest control companies require some sort of contract. This is the case with the company I use at least. You can't just schedule them to come out and do one visit. You have to sign a contract for a year of service. I pay $30.00 per month and am very happy with the service, so if they have a branch in your area, I would recommend them.

Is Flea and Tick Control Linked to Disappearing Honeybees?

The phenomenon is called colony collapse disorder (CCD). Bees by the millions abandon their hives and vanish, leaving behind a myriad of theories as to the cause. Mite infestation, fungi, bacteria, even cell phone interference has been blamed.

How serious is the problem? As serious as food is to human survival. For the survival of the long list of food crops that require pollination, not to mention the people who eat them, the need to explore all possible theories cannot be overstated.

One such theory is the use of conventional pesticides. I'm referring to the stuff you spray or squeeze on your dogs and cats as well as the super toxic industrial strength agri-overkill stuff we justifiably drag out of the closet every five or ten years and blame everything on.

Commercial beekeepers fumigate their hives with pesticides to kill varroa mites. Reports of decimated bee populations and plummeting honey production have flooded the news media over the past decade. On the other hand, organic beekeepers who use no pesticides, have reported no instances of colony collapse disorder. None!

Am I missing something here or is the problem just too obvious?

Is this proof positive that pesticides are to blame for CCD? Maybe not. But unlike the bureaucrats who want to form endless committees to study the problem until there's no one left on the planet, there is something that you and I can begin doing right now to help avoid potential disaster.

As you know, not all flea and tick products are the same. Some use conventional pesticides that can harm a lot more than fleas and ticks. Advantage Cats Over

Can Advantage for dogs be used on cats?

I went to the vet today and they gave me Advantage for Dogs to use on my cats. They said it goes longer, 1/2CC for under 10 lbs and 1CC for 10 lbs or over for cats. Is this safe? It is 9.1% imidacloprid.

I have posted a link to a website. As you can see in the chart, the answer is a qualified yes. As long as it is Advantage, and not K9Advantix.

Follow the dosing instructions from your vet.

A Detailed Guide to Grooming your Cat

To keep your cat happy, healthy and clean it is essential to properly groom your cat. By reading this section you will learn how and when to groom your cat and also what equipment to use. You will learn how to brush your cat, bath your cat, how to clean your cats ears and how to look after your cats teeth.

Brushing and combing your cat

Cats spend 10 percent of their waking hours grooming themselves by licking dirt and excess fur of their coat but this is not enough to properly keep them clean and some cats do not clean themselves properly. You should brush and comb your cat on a regular basis. Short-hair cats are much easier to groom than long-hair cats. If you are unsure of what your cat is, visit the breeds section. When you are grooming your cat you should be alert and checking for fleas, scars, wounds and lumps.

The first thing you need to know is the difference between a cat comb and a cat brush. A cat comb is used to remove excess hair, remove knots and to remove dirt. A cat brush is to fluff up the fur and make it smooth and look good. If you own long-hair cat I would recommend buying both a comb and a brush as you will learn later on, if you own a short-hair cat it is not as important but you can if you want.

You could alternatively choose to buy a cat grooming kit which includes a comb, brush and everything else you need. You can buy the right equipment from your local pet shop but you could also consider buying online. There are many different combs and brushes to choose from and all of them have their advantages and disadvantages. If you want to get the best results and not spend a fortune you should buy a wide toothed comb, a brush and a flea comb. This should all cost under $10 USD.

It is a waste of time brushing your cat with a normal comb/brush. The advantages of using a cat brush is that it shelters the natural body oils, the bristles gently remove tangles and after brushing your cat it will have a shiny, good looking and healthy coat. But most importantly it is designed to remove excess hair, then in future when your cat cleans itself it does not swallow as much hair, preventing it from having a hairball.

If you have a kitten, it should be brushed from an early age so it becomes accustomed to the process and doesn't find it a scary and distressing experience. It will enjoy the grooming procedure but most of all you will not have to train it later on in its life. If you have an adult cat that does not like to be brushed and finds the experience frightening, introduce grooming slowly and do not make the sessions more than five minutes. If this does not work you could try ending the grooming session with playtime so your cat will look forward to it each day. One of the most important things to remember is that a short session each day is better than a long session each week.

As I briefly mentioned before, short hair cats are easier to groom than long-hair cats, it is a bit more difficult and the process can take a bit longer. If you own a short-hair cat you should groom it on a weekly basis or every few days and it should take from 5 to 10 minutes. If you own a long-hair cat grooming should be done everyday or every two days and it should take about 10 to 20 minutes. By now you are probably thinking 'how can you brush a cat for 20 minutes'. The grooming process is not just brushing but is also cleaning nose and ears if necessary and sometimes brushing your cat's teeth. For more information about these, read on.

To groom your cat, follow these easy steps:

-Place your cat on a bench or table. It depends on what your cat is most comfortable with; some owners brush their cat on their laps.

-Gently brush from head to tale using short and gentle strokes with your comb to remove knots, do not pull hard otherwise it will hurt and distress your cat, making the experience unpleasant and enjoyable. For best results also brush under its neck and stomach. If you have a flea comb, brush again from head to tale.

-Use a brush to fluff up the fur, if you are unsure of what brush to use ask your local pet shop. A cat brush is good for your cat's appearance and health and can be brought from a number of different places.

Bathing your cat

It is not necessary to bath your cat unless it becomes very dirty. Most people who have prize-winning cats bath their cat on a regular basis. Many cats do not like water and find a bath a frightening and traumatic experience. If you ever need to bath your cat, the below information will tell you how. The first thing you need to do is to brush your cat to remove excess hair and dirt. Talk to your cat with relaxed voice to keep it as calm as possible and do no make quick movements. Have everything ready before you start which should consist of 4-6 towels, shampoo, a hair dryer and cotton balls. You can use special cat shampoo or you can use regular shampoo but it really doesn't make a difference.

Use cotton balls to protect water from getting into your cats ears. If your cat has smaller ears use only half or even a quarter. If you have a bathroom or laundry hose, use it because it makes it much easier. If you don't have a hose use a cup or plastic container. You should not wear good clothes because the chances are that you will end up as wet as your cat. Wash your cat in a bath or a laundry sink. Start by wetting it with warm water. Avoid wetting its eyes and ears as much as possible unless it particularly dirty.

Hold your cat firmly because it will try to escape and probably bite and scratch you. Once the cat is wet apply shampoo and gently massage. If your cat is really dirty you can shampoo twice. Rinse your cat from top to bottom and make sure you get all of the shampoo out. Use the towels to dry your cat as best as you can then finish the job off with a hairdryer.

Cleaning your cats ears

Cleaning your cat's ears should be a part of your grooming routine. To get rid of the dirt and wax, use a cotton swab but never go deeper than you can see because it can cause permanent damage to your cats hearing. It should be done every month.

Dental Care

Many people do not brush their cats teeth often enough, some have never done it. If your cat's teeth are not brushed, bacteria will build up and could result in loss of teeth. You should brush your cat's teeth every week. If you have a kitten you should start brushing when all of its 36 teeth have grown which is around 6 months of age. If you have an adult cat, introduce slowly and keep the sessions short.

You can buy special toothbrushes designed for cats but a child's toothbrush will be just as good, just make sure the bristles are soft so they do not cut the gums. Do not use normal toothpaste because it will cause digestive problems and make your cat sick. You can buy special cat toothpaste from your pet shop, vet or online.

To properly brush your cat's teeth start by gently brushing the outer surface of the teeth. Do not brush the inside of the teeth until your cat is used to the process. Brush in a circular motion from the bottom of the gum to the tips of the teeth. Some cats require professional cleaning when there is a severe build up of tartar. When brushing your cat's teeth note the condition of your cat's gums.

Consult your vet if the gums are swollen, if there is any bleeding, bad breath, drooling, dark spots, sores, refusal to open mouth or reluctance to eat. If your cat has any of these symptoms there is a chance that it has gum disease. Gum disease is common in cats and can be fatal unless treated. It begins with the build up of plaque and tartar which causes the roots to become infected. This can be prevented by regular brushing.

Has anyone used Hartz Flea and Tick applicators for dogs?

I just bought Hartz Flea and Tick Plus, the once a month applicators, for dogs. I've used Frontline in the past and never seen good results. Has anyone used Hartz who has bad or good things to say? Just curious how effective it is. thanks

Stay away from Hartz! That product is responsible for many pet deaths!

As far as Frontline not working... it is important that you understand that products like Frontline are not repellents. They will kill the fleas/ticks after a certain period of time. However, if you are not satisfied with Frontline there are other products out there like Advantage and Revolution.

NOTE: My only objection to the product K9Advantix is I would not recommend it for households that have cats. The product is not supposed to be used on cats, however, we have seen cats in our clinic who became ill after ingesting Advantix (from grooming the family dog). So, if you have cats, I would steer clear, otherwise it is a great product.

Great Dane Lover: Our clinic only sells Frontline, as well. None of our clients have ever reported an issue with it.

Watching Out For Hearworm And Fleas In Dogs

Heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs need to be eliminated by following appropriate medications in them.  Many products have come up in the commercial fields to protect the dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites like hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Among the heart worm, fleas and other parasites, the fleas produce the hyper sensitive reactions in the affected animals. Hence, the animals infested with fleas start severely scratching of body. Many times, the scratching is so severe and the skin becomes more hyperemic and dermatitis occurs in the affected areas.

Animal will not lie down or sleep comfortably due to the constant bites by the fleas. Hence, animal looks as if affected by some severe skin disease.  If the animal is not properly attended for this tick bite problem, there will be often secondary bacterial invasions in these sites and there may even be a bad smell emanating from the skin areas.

Close observation of the dog is highly essential to rule out the occurrence of fleas disturbing the animal to a greater extent. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be tested for the presence of ticks, lice etc. For this, the hair materials need to be separated and the close observation with patience is required for the proper diagnosis.

In many incidences, if anemia is present, the blood protozoa need to be ruled out in addition to the hookworm problems.  The clinical problems like anemia, loose motion, pot belly etc. might be recognized by the dog owners themselves and however, the dog needs to undergo the routine health related examination involving fecal examination, hematological examination and blood smear examination.  

Many commercial products have come up in the market, which are useful to deal with all these conditions by single dose.  Drugs like ivermectin are highly useful and are available in both injection and oral form in addition to the solution form that can be applied on the skin. These drugs in dogs can lead to the prophylaxis of these conditions also.
