sugar glider of ferret for a begginer?

i want to know which is more playful, ad more social, and will like me more if treated well.

i just got a sugar glider for an early Christmas present.

Sugar Gliders aren't as great as they seem.

They never come out of their pouch during the day
They have this oder (like sourish smell)
They take a while to get use to you
they have to have a lot of space
They are LOUD at night (don't keep them in your room!)
Be sure to get two because they ae very social animals and may end up with behavior problems with a buddy

Exotic Pets: Family Friends or Status Symbols?

Many pet owners in Northern Virginia are choosing to keep exotic or unconventional animals as pets rather than the usual cats, dogs, birds, or small rodents. While some of these pets make friendly additions to your family, others might be viewed as status symbols that do not make good pets because they require special care or simply because they will always be somewhat wild and dangerous.

So-called exotic pets are becoming more common in the Northern Virginia area, with some being sold at local pet stores today. There are a wide variety of possible exotic pets available. These include mammals such as hedgehogs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, and ferrets; reptiles from turtles to lizards and snakes; amphibians (which include salamanders and frogs), insects, saltwater fish, and corals. Although pet stores in Northern Virginia offer many of these creatures, it is recommended that you either buy your exotic pet from a reputable breeder or that you adopt one from a rescue group, which will ensure the animal is a good fit for your family. Remember, hiring a pet sitter to take care of  your dog  or cat  while you are on vacation is easy, just be sure you have a pet sitter that is willing to take care of your exotic pet as well; that snake might be a little scary!

 If you decide you would like to add an exotic pet to your household, spend time researching the specific needs of the animals you are considering before you make your final choice.

Consider the following factors as you decide whether or not an exotic pet is right for your family:

 Size: of pet and of housing requirements.

Legality: in your state and community.

Social needs: including amount of daily attention needed, type of companionship needed, and compatibility with children or other pets already in the home.

Cost: for initial purchase, for food, for health care, for possible destructive behavior.

Information: including diet and care requirements and also local vet(s) that are familiar with this animal. Will your neighbor or pet sitter care for the pet if you go away?

Activity level including how active and/or destructive the pet will be and WHEN it will be active!

 Whatever pet you choose to add to your family, whether exotic or common, large or small, furry or feathered, as pet owners we all know the following observation is true: Pets can be wonderful companions for the old and young alike! Enjoy the pets in your life!

The Most Popular Exotic Pets

The term "exotic pets" leads many people to think of expensive, hard to manage and maintain animals that try hard to escape and want only to eat your family. This is not necessarily true; the category encompasses a whole lot of much smaller, and family friendly pets. Cats and dogs are nice family pets, but are not always a real viable option. Apartment dwellers might find it easier to keep a small, exotic pet, and in fact, in some buildings certain types may be the only ones allowable.

Some of the best and most popular exotic pets for children are some of the simplest to care for. Look for the animals that are most child friendly, which would rule out any potentially poisonous, feistier than average or Houdini-esque pets. Keep to the ones that have at least a modicum of the cute factor to them, and always keep in mind that you are going to potentially be adopting this animal in a few weeks.

A great starter pet is a Guinea pig, especially for an older child, as long as the child is capable of dealing with some simple rules. A quiet, gentle child will find a guinea pig becomes fairly easy to handle with regular handling and they rarely bite unless frightened. Guinea pigs are also fairly inexpensive, needing only a basic cage, some clean fresh bedding and an easy to find diet. They do require Vitamin C because they are prone to scurvy, but can get that from the same fresh fruits and vegetables that your family is already eating.

Other rodents are fairly good choices as starter pets, but each have their own benefits and drawbacks to consider. Rats might creep out some family members, but are remarkably intelligent and have been known to bond with their human keepers with consistent, gentle handling. Some rodents are best kept in a pair, while others are better kept as single pets, so make sure you know which is which.

If buying a rodent for a pet is just more than you can really handle, there are other exotic pet options that are still small and relatively easy to care for. Smaller birds like the finch and parakeet are very good starter animals, although are a lot more fragile than the rodent groups. Birds are best left for the older child. Another option is lizards and snakes. Some are kind of hard to maintain and need a lot of work to care for. Remember, the larger the reptile or amphibian, the larger the cage and the more intensive the "zoo-keeping." Keep in mind the snake's diet before you allow him to slither home with you.

Finally, if you truly want a low maintenance, nearly hands off pet, consider the hermit crab or the Madagascar hissing cockroach. Neither really needs a lot of human interaction, both only need a small space and will not pout if their keepers ignore them for days on end.

which is better for a pet, a guinea pig or a ferret?

im trying to decide on which to get, a ferret or a guinea pig. im wanting a pet that would be best for me. one that wont bite much, and that has the better personality. i need a good friend, and im sure the pet i get will be great! so i need your help.

g. pigs usually require less care. make sure you talk to a vet that specializes in pocket pets before making your decision. don't listen to the person in the pet store. g. pigs require additional supplementations of vit c, and not just water additives the best ways are broccoli, lettuce, not iceberg, and other green veggies. ferrerts require special cages, they tend to escape, and need regular vet visits and should be vaccinated. but they are fun too, but ferrets do have a natural odor even if they are descented. do your research, talk to actual professionals, and pick the right buddy for you.

Ferrets as Pets – is This the Right Pet for You?

Many people are now considering ferrets as pets. This animal is the third most popular pet in the United States according to the pet industry, in spite of the fact that it's illegal to own one in California, one of our most populous states.

You may be thinking of getting a ferret yourself.

Just don't make the mistake of assuming that this curious, independent critter is anything like any other pet you've ever known.

The ferret is a small, long-bodied, low-slung creature closely related to weasels, skunks, wolverines and badgers. Their sleek bodies and thick soft fur reveal their close relationship to the mink, while their intelligence, ingenuity and playfulness mark them as a relative of the otter. All these animals are carnivores, and the ferret is no exception.

Since a ferret can live for 7 to 9 years or even longer, you must really understand what you're getting into before adopting one of these little animals as a household pet.

For the ferret's well-being, and yours, the adoption of a ferret should be a decision that is made after long and careful thought.

For instance, you should not assume that the ferret is a good substitute for your young child's hamster, since ferrets require lots of attention, playtime and affection. They are very social animals, and can't stay locked in their cage forever without company or companionship. If you can't spend several hours a day playing and socializing with your ferret, you should consider a goldfish instead.

Ferrets are also much less forgiving than the tiny hamster or placid guinea pig, and will defend themselves if a small child hurts them. Any child under the age of 6 (and many older children) will not have the sensitivity or coordination they need to pick up a ferret without hurting it. These animals are not recommended for households with small children for that reason.

Ferrets do have sharp teeth, and they'll use them to protect themselves.

Ferrets must have a cage where they can sleep peacefully (as much as 18 to 20 hours a day), but they can't stay in their cage all the time. When they do come out, they will act much like a kitten on steroids, with an extra dose of curiosity and independence.

They love to play, and if they have been properly socialized they will love to play with you. But this also means that they will find many things to play with that you may prefer they leave alone – and some items they decide to chew or wrestle with can be dangerous to the animal.

That means that much attention must be paid to the chore of ferret-proofing your house (before you bring your new pet home) in order to protect your pet and your possessions. If you were thinking that your new ferret would simply stay in his cage all the time, you must rearrange your thinking or forget the idea of having one of these animals as a pet.

And if you thought they would grow out of their playfulness, as many cats do, you are mistaken. However, they sleep for much of the day so they're active for only a few hours, and they are usually willing to schedule their play at a time that's convenient for their owners.

Unfortunately, many people are getting ferrets for pets without carefully considering the decision. As the ferret becomes more popular as a pet, many ferrets are being abandoned at the local shelter or rescue organization or simply put out into a field to starve to death when their owners grow tired of them. This is almost always certain death for the previously loved pet ferret.

Wild members of the weasel family are very efficient killers who learn to hunt from their mothers – but domesticated ferrets have no opportunity to learn the skills needed to help them survive in the wild. When abandoned out of doors, most ferrets will survive only a few days before turning into a meal for a cat, coyote, or fox - or simply starving to death.

Unfortunately, many animal shelters will not accept a ferret that his owner no longer wants.

Since giving up any pet is emotionally traumatic for the owner, and potentially fatal for the animal, you should make the decision to adopt a ferret as a pet only after careful study and consideration.

Ferret...Sugar Glider...?

Which do you prefer as a pet and why?

I've had both! Well, all 3 since I bring the chinchilla's into this too.

HOW EASY TO TAKE CARE OF: Ferrets are about the same level as chins. Sugar Gliders are much more high maintenence than the other two, but if you have the time that should be no problem at all.

SMELL: I would rate the smell on the two of them about the same. Which is to say, quite high if you don't clean their cage and fur. Definitely higher than the practically oderless chinchilla's. My sugar gliders are well bonded so have no problems when I give them baths ((well the girl a little bit, but she's always a little fussy, the girls are harder to bond with)) and I could do the same with my ferrets when I had them. I use a special shampoo for them.

DOGS: My dogs are never in the room with the sugar gliders so I'm not sure how they would react. And I never had dogs and ferrets at the same time so I can't comment on that. But I have seen lots of pictures of sugar gliders sitting on dogs. It just depends on how mellow your dogs are and how bonded the sugar gliders are.

SPACE: Both require large housing units, but since you have a large house this shouldn't be a deciding factor for you.

CHILDREN/FAMILY: I believe ferrets are more child friendly than sugar gliders. But since you have teenagers I don't think that should be a deciding factor for you. As long as everyone in the family knows the basics on what to do/not to do with the animals that is.

INTERESTING FACTS: Got to say I don't know any about ferrets that can't be easily found. And the sugar glider community is so extensive and really try to let new people know everything so nada there too. The links below have "interesting" facts as well as basics. The forum is probabaly your best bet for interesting/cute stories/facts.

MY OPINION: I personally found the sugar gliders to be a more rewarding animal in the long run. You just put so much effort and time into them that when they are completly bonded it's amazing. As soon as my boy figures out I'm in the room he's out of the pouch, barking at the door to get out and jump all over me! It's just the cutest thing ever! And tent time! That has to be the most amusing thing ever. They just do the craziest things. Then again, I have had the suggies for 5 years and counting now and I only had the ferrets for 1. *shrugs*

Answering the Question - Is it Okay to Feed Your Ferrets Cat Food?

Ferrets are adorable pets that are very active and playful. However, due to lack of basic information about them, owners of the pet usually are confused about one question. Is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food? The answer is not entirely a yes or no. They are carnivorous and love meat, especially cooked. If you can find quality ferret food in your locality then there is nothing like it. However, cat food is good enough to provide them most of the nutrients they need, in case it is hard to find good ferret food.

If you are planning to feed your ferret with cat food, ensure that it has at least 30-35% protein content and 15-20% fat content. High quality protein content in the food keeps the them active and energetic. Kitten food is usually preferred for ferrets if you are unable to find traditional food. However, kitten food like kibble should be brown and crunchy. This also helps in maintaining the dental health of the pet. Crunchy cat food can also be given to them. However, soft cat food should be avoided.

Canned or dry cat food is almost as good as ferret food. But you should make sure the food is low in fiber, sugar and grains. The fiber content in the food should be less than 3% at all costs. Sweets and sugar content also prove harmful to them causing insulin related complications when they grow old. The food should be dry but it should not be soft. Dry diet is always more nutritious for the pet.

The other advantage of dry ferret diet is that it is more economical. It also lasts longer and does not get spoilt when stored. If you are wondering "is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food?" you need not be worried if you can ensure that the food contains some vitamin supplement as well. Finally you should make sure the ferret drinks enough water to avoid dehydration. Many pet owners leave a small bowl of water near the cage to ensure it sips from it every now and then.

Caring for Your Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs can make very impressive pets. They are considered to be the most affectionate animal among others. If you fail to pay attention to their nails and they steadily keep on growing, chances are they will incise the pigs' pads. For this reason, infection might begin to develop and this infectivity will cause too much pain for your pet. Trimming the animal's nails once in a month should suffice.

Before you decide to have guinea pigs as pets, it is best to provide them with dwellings that are of the right kind which are able to hold up their structures and should be huge enough to let them freely move around. The minimum size of the cage should be at least four to six feet with the flooring not lifted since these pigs have extremely sensitive feet. Do not try to use flooring made of wire instead create a cage from iron or aluminum bars to modify their houses. Usually a plastic cage that has a slide out system is a perfect option.

Make sure that the bottom of the cage for the guinea pigs has proper bedding like hay, shavings and products made out of paper. What makes a better pet? (guinea pig OR chinchilla?)?

What makes a better pet a guinea pig or a chinchilla give me the pros and cons of your favorite and your personal opinion. thx!!

It really depends on what kind of a pet you want.

Chinchillas need very large, tall cages, whereas guinea pigs only need single-level cages, which don't even need to have a top on them. Both are social animals who would do best with a cage mate of the same sex, but they *can* be kept on their own.

Chinchillas are not cuddly animals who are going to want to be held for very long. Guinea pigs will tolerate being held, and many of them will enjoy it. While both should be given time outside of their cage, chinchillas need about an hour daily in a safe room.

Chinchillas have a more "limited" diet. They cannot have fruits or veggies, and treats should be very limited, if given at all. Guinea pigs, on the other hand, *should* have fruits and veggies, and overall just have more things they can be given to eat.

Chinchillas aren't as widely kept as guinea pigs, meaning there are less safe chinchilla products readily available. If you do get a chinchilla, you will probably end up having to order much of the supplies for them online. Since guinea pigs are much more common as pets (and easier to care for), it will be much easier to find products for them in a typical pet store.

Chinchillas are classified as exotic animals. This means that they need exotic vets, which in turn means that the vet bills for a chinchilla are going to be substantially more than those of a guinea pig. The initial setup of getting a chinchilla will also cost you several hundred dollars more than a guinea pig.

One more thing to think about is that guinea pigs will live 5-7 years, whereas chinchillas can live 15-20, even 25 years. Think about where you are going to be in that time, and whether or not you are going to have the time, space, money and energy for a pet.

History of Chinchillas?

When most people hear the word rodents, the first thing that comes to mind are rats.  Rats, because of their lifestyle, habitat and reputation as disease carriers are among the most reviled animals on the planet.  But it turns out that some of the rat's closest relatives are some of our most beloved pets, especially for kids.  Hamsters, guinea pigs, mice and chipmunks are all rodents and close relatives of rats.  Most people have no problem with these furry animals.  Another rat relative that people have a love for, even if not necessarily as a pet, is the furry chinchilla.  This rodent is one of the most highly regarded sources of fur.

There are two main varieties of chinchillas.  Brevicaudata is a short tailed chinchilla often referred to as a chinchilla chinchilla.  The chinchilla lanigera is the other variety and has a longer tail.  Apart from tail lengths, there is very little difference between the two species.  There is also an extinct species of chinchilla that was much larger than its modern relatives.  Unfortunately, the two modern species are also close to extinction and exist mainly on fur farms.

Looking at a chinchilla you will easily see their relation to other rodents.  The shape of the head is unmistakably similar to a rat and their bodies resemble those of a large hamster.  They have bushy tails like a squirrel and utilize a defense mechanism similar to that of a skunk.  Unlike many other rodents, most chinchillas have only two offspring per litter.  This, along with their popularity, is a major factor in their endangered status.

Chinchilla are fairly simple genetically and any defects pass easily to offspring.  These defects can account for the wide variety in fur colors.  The most desired color of chinchilla fur is pure ebony.  Pure black chinchillas are the product of mutations and new mutations can quickly lead to further changes in an offspring's color.  If both parents were pure ebony chinchillas, then the offspring will also be mostly black, but may have certain aberrations.  Because of the dynamics of mutations, charcoal colored chinchillas are among the rarest.  This color only appears if both parents carry the gene for a certain mutation.

Though ebony fur is the most popular, one of the things that makes the chinchilla so popular is the wide variety of colors their fur comes in.  Though pure colors are somewhat rare, you will often see various combinations of white, beige, gold, and even violet or blue.  As blood lines become less heterogeneous due to inbreeding, it is becoming more difficult to find new fur varieties, making the remaining wild chinchillas that much more in demand.   Unfortunately their beauty has been their demise and chinchillas will likely disappear from the wild in our lifetime.

If your talking about a C&C cage, then awesome! I'm so happy to hear people talking about getting these for their piggies. They work terrific, and pigs are very social creatures who need space to run and popcorn.
You should at least make a 2x3 sized cage but if you have extra grids and the space then I would reccomend building a 2x4, I have a 2x4 and It's so spacious!
What I reccomend doing is having an igloo on one side of the cage (length ways) and put the kitchen (waterbottle, food, hay, etc...) on the other side of the cage.
If you have any more toys try putting them on the side of the cage and maybe one or two in the middle so they can run laps circling the toy.

Guinea Pig Cages - C

What are C&C cages and what makes them so popular? Let's take a closer look at the C&C cage:

As far as we can tell, the original C&C cage design was developed (and made popular) a few years ago by an innovative guinea pig rescue organization. This cage style was developed as a matter of necessity so that the guinea pig shelter could efficiently house a large number of pigs in a cost-effective manner. For this reason, to this day, the C&C cage tends to have a very low cost per square-inch of living space -- in other words - C&C cages tend to offer a lot of cage for the money.

The mysterious name C&C originates from the two main materials used to construct this category of small animal cage: Cubes and Coroplast.

The frame and wire lattice portion of the cage is built from wire grids normally used in the assembly of wire grid storage cubes. These square wire grids are usually 14-inches long on each edge. This sort of shelving is often seen in stores or boutiques where clothing or other items are displayed in arrays of wire grid cubes or cubbies. Hence, the first C in C&C comes from the word cube.

The second C in C&C comes from the other fundamental material used in C&C cage construction -- Coroplast. Coroplast is a trade name and is essentially a contraction of the product description: corrugated plastic. Coroplast is corrugated PVC (polyvinylchloride) plastic sheeting and is used to form the litter pan or bin in the bottom of the cage. This material is commonly used by sign-makers in the fabrication of economical weatherproof signage.

Coroplast has some remarkable properties that make it highly suitable for its application in the pet cage arena.

First of all, it is constructed of PVC (yes, the same basic material used in PVC pipes). This material is chemically inert which means water, solvents, oils and other chemicals generally have no effect on it. What this means to the concerned pet-owner is: a) it is waterproof and (more importantly) urine-proof. b) soaps, detergents, vinegar and other cleaning agents will not harm it. c) it is indigestible - stomach acids do not affect it. This means if your pig happens to be a chewer, the material will pass harmlessly through its digestive system. d) Coroplast is non-toxic and it is certified to be safe for use in contact with food.

C&C cages have become very popular as a do-it-yourself type of project. However, in recent years, suitable wire metal grids have become increasingly difficult to obtain. National department store chains have carried storage cube kits for several years. Until recently, most contained 14-inch square grids with 9 openings on each side (9x9 array). These grids had openings of roughly 1.5 square-inches.

Recently, at least one major chain has drastically redesigned this product. It now contains two varieties of 14-inch grids: grids with an array of 5x5 spaces (approx. 2.8-inch spacing) and grids with an 8x8 array (approx. 1.75-inch spacing).

CAUTION: Both of these grid configurations (5x5 and 8x8) are to be strictly avoided by guinea pig owners.

5x5 grids are way too large and are ineffective in containing many size pigs. 8x8 grids are only slightly too large and present a potential choking hazard. We have received bulletins from several guinea pig rescue organizations warning us to avoid 8x8 grids. They cited various strangulation incidents involving grids with these larger openings and counseled us to use only 9x9 grids in our guinea pig cage designs.

C&C cages are almost always built as do-it-yourself projects and tend to be very much larger (and therefore healthier for your pig) than standard manufactured "pet store cages." Generally one of three approaches is taken by do-it-yourself C&C cage builders. The skilled do-it-yourselfer creates the cage from scratch - designing the cage and buying the materials by themselves. The industrial-yet-thrifty do-it-yourselfer also buys materials on their own, but only after buying cage plans from a competent C&C cage designer. And the shrewd do-it-yourselfer takes the easy, proven, no-hassle route by purchasing a packaged C&C cage kit - complete with materials and instructions - from a reputable and proven C&C cage seller.

Pig Small

can anyone tell me how to handle a newly born guinea pig very small in size?

it is super small very delicate so if anyone can help me deal with this cute soft animal then please do.

Guinea pig pups can be handled at once if you are careful. We have been checking litters as soon as they are born or as soon as we discover them for over 40 years and have never had any problems from doing so!

They are small but not as fragile as you might think as long as you are careful not to squeeze when you pick them up. Cup them up with one hand with the other on top so that they are secure. They are VERY fast and squirmy so you do need to make sure that you have them enclosed. Try handling them while they are in the cage at first. That way, if you loose control, they will not fall and are in a contained area. When you are used to it, you can actually take them out of the cage. Handling pups often but for short periods of time is a great way to socialize them.

Micro Pigs Oh For A Pint Size Porker

As many people are aware, keeping small pigs or Micro pigs as they are know is rapidly becoming the new must have craze in pets. But how many people stop and consider what is really involved in caring for them, before undertaking such a commitment? So what do you need to think about before you indulge yourself in "Piggy Heaven"? Just because Paris and Victoria both have them doesn't mean you should rush off to micro pigs UK, shouting show me the bacon!

We wonder why animals live the lives they do when such people use them as fashion accessories, the mind boggles as to why reputable breeders would want to sell these lively intelligent creatures to anyone who hasn't given serious thought to Pig Ownership and are only interested in this Years "must have" fad.

Something to think about before getting a Micro pig:

Do you have the time to take care of it? Pigs are very sociable animals and ideally should be kept in pairs.

Do you have room, I know there have been reports of pigs living in flats and apartments, but get real, do you really think that's a viable option.

Pigs like to root, its in their nature, so they need a good outside space, with adequate shelter and ideally should live outside for most of the time at least.

Take time to do your homework, find out everything you need to know, about their environment, nutritional needs, habits and so on.

Last of all, the little piglet that you take home will not remain that size, the concept of teacup pigs is rubbish, yes they are delightful as piglets and may well fit into a teacup at this tender age, but a fully grown Micro Pig is about the same size as a medium sized dog or even bigger.

If after careful consideration you still decide that a Micro pig is for you, then I wish you and your pig every happiness in the world, if taken care of properly they make wonderful pets and are great fun to own but remember a pig is for life not just a fad.

Guinea Pigs - a Cute Little Pet Living a Lie

True or false: Guinea pigs are small, hybrid animals that have been cultivated and cross-bred from wild pigs originally captured on the island of New Guinea. The fact that this animal was originally cross-bred in the laboratory to establish a pig breed that was both of friendly disposition and small enough to keep as a house pet, is the reason that the guinea pig still remains associated with labs in most of our minds today.

Yes - I made all of that up. Guinea pigs are no more pigs from New Guinea than a pineapple is a Granny Smith sprouting from a pine tree. It's all a sad, misleading deception. Guinea pigs are neither pigs nor are they associated with New Guinea, Old Guinea, YoungAdult Guinea nor any other Guinea that we know of for that matter.

So, as our title suggests, the name "guinea pig" is an outright lie. These little animals are not some form of small mutant dwarf pig. That would be silly (they are actually tiny child-actors wearing tiny mutant dwarf pig costumes). Okay, I made that up too. They are actually rodents from the genus Cavia (which is the reason they are also referred to as Cavies). As rodents, they are related to chinchillas and porcupines - not hogs and boars.

Originally, guinea pigs came from South America - not New Guinea. All guinea pigs that we know of are domesticated animals - which is to say - they do not exist in the wild anymore. A very large relative of the guinea pig called the capybara still lives in the wild in South America. Ironically, due to its very large size, the capybara looks as though it might really be related to a pig or boar rather than its real cousin, the domestic Guinea Pig. What a confusing family, those guinea pigs.

So why do people call this cute little South American rodent a Guinea Pig? It's not clear, since this misleading name was given to this small creature many years ago. Some people have conjectured that the guinea pig was given this name because it makes a noise that sounds like a pig squealing.
