How will i design my guinea pig cage?

later, i will buy a cube set for my guinea pig. i was wondering what design should i do? but make sure it is spacious.
I dont her to be bored in her new cage.
what toys should i get that is safe for her?

If your talking about a C&C cage, then awesome! I'm so happy to hear people talking about getting these for their piggies. They work terrific, and pigs are very social creatures who need space to run and popcorn.
You should at least make a 2x3 sized cage but if you have extra grids and the space then I would reccomend building a 2x4, I have a 2x4 and It's so spacious!
What I reccomend doing is having an igloo on one side of the cage (length ways) and put the kitchen (waterbottle, food, hay, etc...) on the other side of the cage.
If you have any more toys try putting them on the side of the cage and maybe one or two in the middle so they can run laps circling the toy.

Guinea Pig Cages - C

What are C&C cages and what makes them so popular? Let's take a closer look at the C&C cage:

As far as we can tell, the original C&C cage design was developed (and made popular) a few years ago by an innovative guinea pig rescue organization. This cage style was developed as a matter of necessity so that the guinea pig shelter could efficiently house a large number of pigs in a cost-effective manner. For this reason, to this day, the C&C cage tends to have a very low cost per square-inch of living space -- in other words - C&C cages tend to offer a lot of cage for the money.

The mysterious name C&C originates from the two main materials used to construct this category of small animal cage: Cubes and Coroplast.

The frame and wire lattice portion of the cage is built from wire grids normally used in the assembly of wire grid storage cubes. These square wire grids are usually 14-inches long on each edge. This sort of shelving is often seen in stores or boutiques where clothing or other items are displayed in arrays of wire grid cubes or cubbies. Hence, the first C in C&C comes from the word cube.

The second C in C&C comes from the other fundamental material used in C&C cage construction -- Coroplast. Coroplast is a trade name and is essentially a contraction of the product description: corrugated plastic. Coroplast is corrugated PVC (polyvinylchloride) plastic sheeting and is used to form the litter pan or bin in the bottom of the cage. This material is commonly used by sign-makers in the fabrication of economical weatherproof signage.

Coroplast has some remarkable properties that make it highly suitable for its application in the pet cage arena.

First of all, it is constructed of PVC (yes, the same basic material used in PVC pipes). This material is chemically inert which means water, solvents, oils and other chemicals generally have no effect on it. What this means to the concerned pet-owner is: a) it is waterproof and (more importantly) urine-proof. b) soaps, detergents, vinegar and other cleaning agents will not harm it. c) it is indigestible - stomach acids do not affect it. This means if your pig happens to be a chewer, the material will pass harmlessly through its digestive system. d) Coroplast is non-toxic and it is certified to be safe for use in contact with food.

C&C cages have become very popular as a do-it-yourself type of project. However, in recent years, suitable wire metal grids have become increasingly difficult to obtain. National department store chains have carried storage cube kits for several years. Until recently, most contained 14-inch square grids with 9 openings on each side (9x9 array). These grids had openings of roughly 1.5 square-inches.

Recently, at least one major chain has drastically redesigned this product. It now contains two varieties of 14-inch grids: grids with an array of 5x5 spaces (approx. 2.8-inch spacing) and grids with an 8x8 array (approx. 1.75-inch spacing).

CAUTION: Both of these grid configurations (5x5 and 8x8) are to be strictly avoided by guinea pig owners.

5x5 grids are way too large and are ineffective in containing many size pigs. 8x8 grids are only slightly too large and present a potential choking hazard. We have received bulletins from several guinea pig rescue organizations warning us to avoid 8x8 grids. They cited various strangulation incidents involving grids with these larger openings and counseled us to use only 9x9 grids in our guinea pig cage designs.

C&C cages are almost always built as do-it-yourself projects and tend to be very much larger (and therefore healthier for your pig) than standard manufactured "pet store cages." Generally one of three approaches is taken by do-it-yourself C&C cage builders. The skilled do-it-yourselfer creates the cage from scratch - designing the cage and buying the materials by themselves. The industrial-yet-thrifty do-it-yourselfer also buys materials on their own, but only after buying cage plans from a competent C&C cage designer. And the shrewd do-it-yourselfer takes the easy, proven, no-hassle route by purchasing a packaged C&C cage kit - complete with materials and instructions - from a reputable and proven C&C cage seller.

no, you should not house a rabbit, no matter how small with a guinea pig. Guinea pigs are very fragile and their bones break easily. If the rabbit got carried away or fisty with the guinea pig it could do alot of damage to him. Rabbits back legs are very strong and powerful.

Rabbits and guinea pigs do NOT have the same diet. They both eat timothy hay, but rabbits and guinea pigs have different requirements of vitamins and minerals. An excess of Vitamin D is not good for guinea pigs and there is quite a bit in rabbit pellets.

How will guinea pigs react to a hammock?

Okay, so I want to add a hammock to my guinea pigs cage. My ferret had a hammock and loved it. I know ferrets and guinea pigs are very different. If you have a guinea pig with a hammock, how does it do with it, and what does it do? If you did research, do they actually love them? Will they be comfortable? Will it be a waste of time? Could I make ir from a washcloth? Thanks for your answers!

Guinea pigs aren't as active as ferrets. I have two guinea pigs and all they seem to need is an igloo. I think they are just lazy though. I think it would be a fun way to play with your new pet, give it a go! don't use a washcloth cause all they will do is chew on it and tear it to shreds. If you really want one then you can find them at your local pets store. And make sure that it hangs lowww. If its too high they will just try to jump on it and hurt themsleves. Hope i helped!

Guinea Pigs – A Quick-Start Guinea Pig Owners Guide

So you've just brought your new guinea pig home from the shelter or pet store. And now, you're not entirely sure what to do. Let us help you get off to a good start with this Quick-Start Guinea Pig Owners' Guide.

First of all, if you've just returned from the shelter or pet store with a single pig, we strongly recommend that you turn right around and go back. Guinea pigs are social creatures and tend to do better when there are at least two pigs living together. Two females are a good combination. Two males can live together in harmony as long as they have been raised together. And while it is possible to introduce two grown males to each other, it does require patience and care. A male and a female are the very best combination, but of course one of them needs to be "fixed" in order to avoid a future in-cage population explosion.

Your first task is to choose a cage. Pet store cages tend to be too small to adequately house a single pig - not to mention multiple pigs. Use the following guidelines when choosing a guinea pig enclosure:

One guinea pig: 6-7 sq. ft.
Two guinea pigs: 7.5 sq. ft.
Three guinea pigs: 10.5 sq. ft.

If you cannot find one large enough at the pet store, you can always build your own cage or buy one online from a reputable cage seller. In recent years, C&C (Cubes and Coroplast ) cages have become quite popular because they provide a lot of cage for the money. Check out the resource box and the end of this article for a link to some online C&C guinea pig cage stores.

Place a nest box, a piece of PVC pipe or other enclosure inside the cage. Pigs like to hide out in cozy little places and providing a hiding place inside the cage will make your pigs feel happier and more secure.

Never place your pigs in an aquarium. Yes, some people do house their pigs in an aquarium, but it is very bad for their respiratory system. Toxic ammonia gas forms as your pigs urinate inside the enclosure. In a wire cage, there is adequate ventilation to carry this gas away. However, in an aquarium the ammonia gas is contained by the glass walls forcing your pigs to breathe it in all day long.

Fill the cage with bedding. Avoid cedar chips and cat litter made from clay. Both are very bad for your guinea pig's respiratory system. A litter made from recycled newspaper works very well. Also, many people have begun to line their cages with an absorbent material covered in fleece. The fleece allows liquids to wick through into the absorbent layer.

In general, Timothy hay is very good for you pigs. Your pigs can have it in virtually unlimited quantities. Alfalfa hay should be given much more sparingly. Alfalfa hay is richer and will cause your pigs to gain excessive weight.

While, commercial pellets are fine for your guinea pigs, however, they are also very rich and should be given in small quantities as a supplement to the main diet which should consist mostly of fresh vegetables and fruits. Only vegetables with rich dark colors should be chosen. Iceberg lettuce should never be fed to your pigs; it is mostly empty calories with little nutritional value.

Don't forget to install a water bottle in your pig's cage. Water dishes do not work well - as pigs tend to tip them over.

Above all, don't panic. Guinea pigs are wonderful animals and do not require an excessive amount of care. Remember that guinea pigs do better in pairs or groups than living alone. Be sure to provide adequate living space. C&C cages are a popular choice nowadays because they do provide a lot of room for a reasonable price. Provide a comfortable hiding place for your pigs - many nest boxes are available for guinea pigs. An upside-down small cardboard box works well too (although guinea pigs like to chew so you may have to replace it often). Feed your pig mostly deep-colored fresh veggies and provide a water bottle. Choose Guinea Pig Cages Carefully!

Are you interested in having a really happy guinea pig? A proven way to make certain of this is to make sure your guinea pig has a nice clean home to live in, and that he has quite a lot of room run around!

Generally speaking guinea pig cages really needs to be as big as your house space and your budget will allow. You don't need to go overboard, but it is better to give your guinea pig more room than he needs than to give him less room than he would need to stay healthy and happy. As a guideline, your guinea pig cage should be between seven and eight square feet assuming you have just one guinea pig, and between ten and eleven square feet when you've got two guinea pigs. For each additional guinea pig in your cage you should have between two and three additional square feet of living space. If that sounds like a lot just remember that guinea pigs need lots of room to romp around and get exercise, and the more exercise a guinea pig gets, the happier he's going to be. Without adequate exercise your furry friend will get fat, and overweight guinea pigs are more likely to develop health problems, and you do not need that to happen. If your guinea pig is lucky enough to have a 2-story home remember that any additional levels mustn't be counted in providing the minimum square footage.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find a good quality guinea pig cage at your local pet store. If you cannot find a cage that is big enough you can consider making your own. It's not going to take you very long, and it can be very rewarding. Not merely because you will have a cage that your guinea pig really loves, but because it will more than likely outshine anything you might have purchased.

Guinea pigs really should be housed in cages composed of wire rather than glass enclosures because wire cages provide significantly better ventilation for your pet, and if a glass enclosure breaks it could possibly cut your guinea pig. Wood cages are easily chewed through and so are not your best option for your guinea pig cage.

Your cage of preference must not have a with a wire bottom. Wire floors are problematic for your guinea pigs feet and can trap your pet's toes and legs. Wire can also corrode so it is not so popular among pet owners. The best type of floor for your guinea pigs cage is actually a solid plastic bottom which is the most common that you will find. The cages also needs to be free from all sharp edges and needs to be secure enough to prevent the guinea pigs from escaping. A convenient feature which will make cleaning the cage faster and easier is a slide-out tray type bottom - this should be on your list of must-haves for a cage. A big cage door is also a good addition to a guinea pig's cage so that you have plenty of room to get your hand in to pet, love, and pick up your guinea pig.

A final tip I would like to pass on is to be mindful of where you keep your guinea pigs cage. Because guinea pigs are susceptible to upper respiratory infections you should avoid keeping your pet's cage in any high-humidity locations like a a laundry room, and bathrooms with showers and baths also needs to be avoided.

Remember, keep your guinea pig happy - he is dependent upon you!
