i always wondered because they have sharp claws and wouldnt licking their paw make them scratch them selves

How to Control the Smell From the Litter Box

One of the biggest challenges that you face being the owner of an indoor cat is odor control. A liter box doesn't have to be the main reason that keeps you from brings a cat into your home. I had an automatic litter box and was annoyed that it kept getting stuck and when my cat would use it in the middle of the night, the noise of the rake would wake me up (I am a light sleeper). I recently purchased the omega roll and clean and have been much happier with that.

Ive had my cat for about 5 years..and i'm at that point where i just can't stand cleaning up so much litter on the floor and around the litter box anymore.. We use a traditional open litter box and i would love to get a new one.

How To Make Sure That The Cat Litter Box Gets Used

It's a wonderful thing to have a cat as a pet, but there's no getting away from the chores that come with it, other than feeding and giving your best friend attention, you also have to make sure that the cat litter boxes in your home are taken care of. This can be an easy task or a difficult one, depending on your feline friend, some take to using the cat litter box quite easily, while others take a little longer and may have to be coaxed.

No one is happy with their pet using the floor or plant pots as their bathroom, so it's in your interest to get them using the cat litter box as soon as possible. If this becomes problematic there are a few things that check and do to make sure that your cat becomes more comfortable using it's bathroom area.

Cats Need Room

Cats want space when they use the bathroom, we need to make sure that they have the space they need to do it in. Some cat litter boxes come with hoods, they are great for hiding whats inside the box and they provide the cat with some privacy at the same time. They are a problem though if you have a big cat that can hardly turn around in it, in which case they won't want to go inside. If you make sure that they have more space so that they can get in and out more easily then you'll have a happier cat.

Cats Are Naturally Clean Creatures

Cats are very fastidious, and just like you they don't want a messy bathroom, they respond a lot better when they have clean cat litter boxes. It's important that you clean the litter every day, the longer it sits there, the more likely that it will develop unpleasant odours, and because cats have much more sensitive noses than us, it will be put off by this. Further to this make sure that you clean out the cat litter and disinfect the cat litter box at least once a month to help keep control of bacteria that is building up.

Location, location, location.

If you have a cat litter box that is out in the open, and your cat isn't using it, it's likely that your cat needs a little more privacy. Some cats need to be totally alone when they use the bathroom. If you have a multistorey house then place a cat litter box on each of the floors. Finally, get a box for each of your cats, then plus one. With a little care and attention to the purchase, placement, and maintenance of your cat litter boxes, you can help to ensure that your feline friend stays happy and goes to the bathroom where it should.

Kitty litter has gone through many changes over the centuries seeing as how the original kitty litter was simply ashes put in a box. Owners were getting tired of there cat tracking black paw prints through there house and were looking for a new solution. One day in 1947, industrial absorbent producer Ed Lowe, took note of this problem and suggested clay to his neighbor. He knew clay would be more absorbent and wouldn't track through the house. Seeing how pleased his neighbor was he thought that other cat owners would enjoy his product also.

Ed Lowe filled ten paper bags with his clay and decided to call it "Kitty Litter". He took these bags to the local pet store. Thinking that people wouldn't want to pay for the common dirt he told the shop owner to give it away for free. After a few samples, Cat owners loved Ed Lowe's kitty litter and were more than willing to pay for it. Ed began going across the country advertising his product and the reactions were tremendous. In 1964 Ed Lowe created the brand Tidy Cats and began selling it in grocery stores across America.

Once sold in brown paper bags the Kitty Litter brand began researching new technology in their bags. They reduced the amount of dust in their bags and began to sanitize the litter to create a better environment for cats.

The secret to the ultra absorbent kitty litter is granulated Fuller's Earth. Fuller's Earth is the name used for a wide variety for clay minerals that can carry there own weight in water. The absorbency and chemicals in the clay help reduce the smell of ammonia but the best Kitty Litter manufacturers use other additives such as baking soda to mask the smell of kitty urine and feces.

Cats are attracted to the ease and and privacy of using a their best kitty litter box. Cats like to bury their excretes because of their instincts to hide their trail from other predators. Sense cats would likely be wanting to do something else they will keep going back to the place where it easiest for them to use the bathroom and bury their excretes.

I'm looking into getting a self-cleaning litter box, but I want to be sure I can use a biodegradable litter with it. So far my cats are incredibly unimpressed with shredded paper, and I hate the way sawdust gets tracked all over my house, so I was thinking along the lines of Yesterday's News. Could an automatic box clean that, though? Anybody have any experience to share?

So what litter on the market is not biodegradable. Most cat litters are basically made of clay which is very natural. Clumping litters are made of Bentonite clay. It's doesn't "degrade" because it's basically dirt to start with. What does stuff turn into when it degrades...dirt. It sounds like you are a victim of the green propaganda. So use any clumping cat litter with you self-cleaning litter box.
