General Information about Finches Cages

Cages come in many different shapes and sizes it is very important to pick a cage that suits the size and activity of the bird you're putting in the cage. Cages, either metal or wooden, are the most frequent cost-effective choice for housing finches.

Finches live communally and need room to socialize. They need a bit of Privacy for nesting as well as space for exercise. Brass cages (made of actual brass) are not recommended because of potential toxic qualities. Happy, unstressed finches have their cages or aviaries in quiet, low traffic areas of the house, office or classroom. Swings are an excellent accessory for the finch cage.

Since most stand-up cages are made for parrots and not small birds like Finches, it can be challenging to find stand-up bird cages that work well for Finches and other small birds. When looking for a Finch Cage, just keep in mind that you don't want bar spacing that's wider than 1/2" for your Finch. When setting up the cage or aviary for you finches is that they require ample room to fly around and they must be safe and disease free so the bigger the cage the better.

For a pair of finches the length of the cage should not be less than 30 inches. Toys in the cage are not needed but can be put in the cage if that's what you like. One thing they do need is perches. Dowel perches often cause feet problems so avoid them. Also, never use sand paper covered perches as they are harmful to your bird and offer no benefits. Rather choose nontoxic hardwood branches as perches.

Keep away from redwood, cedar or pressed wood chips as they are very poisonous to birds. As anything made of wood cannot be sterilized, after they are covered in droppings they must be replaced to avoid illness. Finches also like swings but both bird swings and bird perches should be placed out of their flight path and not over their food or water dishes to avoid faecal contamination.

Provide finch feeders for food and water, and dishes for treats and grit as well as an area for a bath. Set up a food dish and water bowl (made of non-toxic plastic or stainless steel) in the cage. Consider placing the containers on opposite sides of the cage to encourage flying and adequate exercise.

Finches will appreciate a nest box to sleep in. You can attach a "bird protector" disk to the side of the cage to prevent mites. Place paper on the cage bottom that can be sprinkled with grit, or use a grit paper.

Although finches require very little time and effort to keep them, a clean environment as well as fresh food and water daily is a must to prevent disease and illness. The basic cage care includes daily cleaning of the water and food dishes. Every two to three days change the paper on the bottom of the cage and sprinkle it with about 1/8" of fresh grit. Weekly wash and dry the entire cage, including the perches.

Finches thrive when they have access to sunlight so place the cage near a window, and open it if weather permits. However, make sure they have also have access to shade if the cage is placed directly in the sun. If you are unable to provide them with natural sunlight, get a bird light and a timer to simulate day and night cycles.

What is the quickest way to train a parrot to talk?(We don't know what happened in the past we got it preowned?

The answer to your question is patience and repartition

I have two parrots they are green Jardines the first Jack we had him when he was just a few months old. The other one Jimmy he was 18 months old and horrible when we had him! he didn't speak but that wasn't the problem he was extremely nasty, he would bite you the first opportunity that he got and he bit hard!!

It took months for him to settle he still has nothing to do with the men in the house but i can do anything with him. He has now finally started talking :0)

He would not talk at all in front of anybody else but now he doesn't care and shouts my name tells the dogs to go in the Kitchen tells our other parrot that he's dirty lol

We have now had Jimmy three Years!! and his talking is only quiet recent it takes love and perseverance don't give up on your bird.

Greet him/her the same way every day without fail Hello Jimmy was the first thing he ever said and boy was i shocked we had owned over two years at that point and he had never uttered a word !!

Training Your Parrot To Talk

When we first buy or purchase or Parrot as a pet, we have so many different expectations. Like, when will the parrot learn to speak or how long will we have this wonderful pet and the joy of holding your Parrot on your forearm or hand.

See, parrot's are so unique, there arent many animals, let alone pet's, that can really measure up to a parrot.

They are absolutely beautiful, they can copy human voices pattern's, and they can live a very, very long time. Many will live all the way to the age of 60 YEARS OLD! Its amazing. But when it comes to actual Parrot owner's, atleast the vast majority of owners, it's all about teaching your parrot to talk.

I have seen and talked to many parrot owner's that could hardly contain there excitement. The expectations of having a speaking Parrot can be great. Especially when you consider that Parrot's are so stunning in there full color. They can be trained to speak, but they can also be very friendly and the relationships built with a Parrot can be very fruitful, for you , your family and of course for the parrot itself.

When I am asked the best way to train a parrot to talk, I am often amazed at how parrot owners are so willing to work with these cool new pet's. So when I tell them that it will tale a little whie, and not more than a couple of months, they are amazed.

With the right parrot training guide, you can actually traing your parrot to talk in way under 2 months. With the proepr training guide, you parrot will be speaking to you in no more than 2-3 weeks. Its nothing that should be considered impossible. You see, parrot's as a whole have some very similar learning pattern's, heck, when you begin to train your Parrot, you will see that he/she will seem to WANT to speak. Part of a parrot's evolvement is being able to mock and scare off enemies in the wild.

How do you get rid of the little moths that are near the bird cages and bird food?

I found little worms hatching into moths that seem to stay around the parrot food droppings and bags of food. How do you safely rid the area of these moths without harming the parrots?

Seed moths are annoying but mostly harmless. Most seed contains eggs or larvae - no amount of cleaning will remove them. Freeze the food for 48 hours before using it. That will kill any pre-existing moth larvae in the food. Store it in a covered container afterwards, to keep it from being reinfested by the moths you already have. As long as there's no food for them to lay eggs in, they'll eventually die off on their own. African Grey Parrot

I think that the African Grey is one of the most beautiful parrots in the species. It's also one of the easiest species to care for. Obviously, by it's name we can tell that the breed originated from Africa. Central Africa actually. These birds are highly intelligent and are known for their exceptional ability to talk and even think. African Greys will, with proper guidance, develope a rather large vocabulary and can usually communicate quite well with their owners.

There are two different types of African Grey parrots. The Congo African Grey is light grey with a red tail. The Timneh African Grey is a darker charcoal grey with a maroon tail. Both of them are considered to be medium-sized in the greater universe of parrots. They tend to grow to be about 10 to 14 inches in length.

As in most species, the males are generally a bit larger then the females, growing to about 12 to 14 inches in length. But unlike many other species in the aviary kingdom, the appearances of both sexes are pretty much the same. No male superiority here. Upon close examination of two african parrots side by side, we will discover that the Female African Grey Parrot will have a narrower head and a more slender neck.

African Greys have a very long lifespan, sometimes living up to 60 years. That means that these parrots will need an owner who can make a long term commitment to them. In addition, because of their high intelligence, African Grey Parrots require an owner that is experienced and who can understand their needs. They can easily become bored so, a stimulating and interactive environment is a must. Without their intellectual needs met African Greys might turn their boredom into behavioral problems like feather picking and other forms of self mutilation, making life difficult for bird and owner. They are very sensitive birds with strong personalities and even a small change in their daily routine or in their surroundings can lead an African Grey parrot to become cranky and disruptive. Although they are typically well behaved and a great pet these birds bring with them many of the same challenges associated with parenthood. African Greys that are unhappy and undisciplined will get into trouble. They might chew wires or bite the hand that feeds them. They pick up behaviors very quickly so if you inadvertently reinforce bad habits you are going to have a problematic relationship with your African Grey. However, on the other hand you can also easily teach them very good habits and behaviors and have a loving happy relationship with your beautiful parrot.

One of the reasons that African Grey parrots make such great pets is because they are very social birds. In the wild they typically stay with the flock for many years. That flocking instinct is exactly what will allow a new, caring owner of the African Grey parrot adopt this new family as part of their flock. Some of them have been known to "cuddle" with their owners. Although they don’t like continual intense physical contact they do enjoy petting and head-scratching. Part of the learning curve of the new owner of the African Grey Parrot is to not be put off bysome of their bird’s rather strange signs of affections. i.e. Regurgitation for a Grey is a sign of deep affection. They will also try to “kiss” their owners on the mouth. While it very tempting to "kiss" the parrot back, it's really not recommended because the human mouth contains bacteria that is quite dangerous to the bird. Like a chile, It is important for the owners to understand that these birds’s have a high need for companionship. If a parrot is lonely they may begin to vocalize excessively, pluck their own feathers, or even start to bite. But, Because of these tendencies, African Grey parrots may not be good pets for a family with young children. Their beaks are very strong and hard and young Children may not understand the danger to them if the parrot is exhibiting bad behavior.

African Grey parrots are full of personality and human like qualities. Those who are lucky enough to own one will have a pet with an intelligence and personality not equaled in many other animals.
