Not looking for a cheap bird but?

I have to be realistic about the size and level of care and money years down the road. The larger parrots will require more money to properly care for in food, cages, toys so as much as I want one it isn't gonna happen. I was thinking of a cockatiel, peach front conure or some other smaller bird that I can easily provide the best for for years. HELP! Tell me about the smaller birds and tell me about the better cages that are the easiest to clean.

I think a cockatiel is your best bet! I have two and they are amazing. They are not TOO much work, not too loud, and will play by them selves (even tho they do need a lot of attention) They will bond to you and sing you songs lol. Which bird should I get?

I want to get a bird and im not sure which one to get.
My choices are an Indian Ringneck Parakeet, a Cockatiel, a Lovebird, or a Canary.
I've never had a bird before and i want one that's easy to train and take care of. Also one that's social and good with people. I'd prefer to only get one bird so they have to be able to live by themselves.
I've ruled out getting a canary or lovebird and the aviary i want to buy from no longer has Ringnecks.
I also found out that they do have budgies available.

If its your first time, and you want an overall fun-loving, playful, trainable bird, I would definitely go for the Parakeet (Budgie) I have always owned budgies every since I was a little child. The are great animals, very easy to care for.

A canary is technically not a parrot at all, they are great singers and easy to care for, but really a look-but-don't-touch kind of animal.

The others are great all great birds, but not for someone with no experience, they need more time and money as well, and in the end if you really care for your parakeet it will come just as good as the others.

The Aviary For Canaries

The canary is well suited to an aviary housing a colony of birds as long as the aviary is large enough to prevent territorial squabbles. If you’re going to use an aviary, house just one male with a few females, or more than three males with several females. Two males will quibble, often viciously, over the females, but more than three males seems to be the recipe for relative peace. Canaries also can be kept with other peaceable birds, including budgies, cockatiels, some of the grass keeps, and some varieties of no aggressive finches, as long as the aviary is large enough, if you do house birds of various species together, keep a close eye on them, especially the hook bills (budgies, cockatiels, and keeps), to make sure that no one terrorizes the other birds’ nesting or roosting areas. Even though they are similar in size, never keep lovebirds with canaries. If you’re serious about trying to do it in an aviary setting.

For a colony of birds’ make sure that you include an excess of high roosting areas as well as feeding stations. You want to make sure that even the weaker personalities are able to eat, drink, and find a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Also, make sure that there’s plenty of shelter from inclement weather. Most outdoor aviaries have a shelter area made of word that serves as both protection and a place for nighttime roosting.

Canaries who are kept outside all year cam become acclimated to the cold and won’t mind winter weather if they’re able to get out of the wind. Some people equip their aviaries with heated areas to make sure that the birds are comfortable. If it gets really cold where you live, keep thick plastic sheets and warm blankets on hand to cover the aviary walls when the weather gets fierce. Also, make sure that the birds’ water doesn’t freeze. If you live in a very warm climate, make sure that part of your aviary is shaded all day, and offer your birds plenty of fresh water.

If yon have the time and inclination, plant your aviary with safe trees and plants, and create water features like fountains. It’s fun to watch the birds interact with these natural elements, and they make them comfortable and offer them shelter. You can grow plants in large clay post with natural, untreated soil and keep other plants outside to rotate  in and out of the aviary when the plants inside become worn.

The floor of the aviary can be elevated so that the waste and excess food fall through, or you can use a concrete slab for easy cleaning. Some people prefer natural soil, sand, or a gravel substrate floor, which the birds do enjoy, but the aviary must have adequate drainage.

For safety, the outdoor aviary should be double-wired with screening in between the wires. The space between the wires prevents predators from reaching into the aviary and pulling your birds through the wires- yes, it can happen! The double wiring also prevents contact with wild birds that will want to feed inside your aviary, possibly passing disease to your birds. In addition, the screening prevents mosquitoes and other pests from entering your aviary and infecting your birds with illnesses.

business of bird breeding?

Ok so my girlfiend and I have these finches that are/ have breed. We have a 45 cubic foot cage so we have room but we are looking to sell the offspring because we've read the parents can become hositle to their young when its time to leave their care. We are also anticipating more litters of birds to come. We have found a non corporate chain pet store that wants to buy our birds because its less stress on the birds if they dont have to get shipped from well wherever they get them. But they need to keep all their business dealings legit and on paper so we are required to have a tax ID number and a registered business name and the works. The thing is even if we do set up all this our "business" will deffinately not be a profitable business since the birds will sell for like $10 a piece. Can someone give me advice?

In the absence of a business plan you at least have come up with a financial analysis that tells yo that the business is not profitable. If you know that, there is no real reason to stay in that business.

Having a colorful environment and toys is important for birds. Use vegetable dye, you can make your own at home and its 100% bird safe. there's all sorts of recipes and instructions online for how to do this, so just google it and you'll be on your way.

Why Proper Parrot Care is Essential for Your Birds Health

Drawn in by their engaging personalities, intelligence and beautiful color combinations, people have been adopting parrots into their homes and lives for many generations. When a parrot is introduced to its new owners and home it is imperative that its requirements are completely appreciated from the beginning in order to minize any harm of relocation.

Parrots occur in all shapes and sizes and each variety may demonstrate different tendancies howver all parrots must receive a suitable balanced diet in order to stay healthy. A usual parrot diet should consist of some key food stuffs which include pellets and seed, fresh produce and clean fresh water.

Birds generally are thought of as "dirty" pets to look after but it is really important to keep your parrots cage clean. As well as the birdcage needing regular cleaning, it is of even more consequence to make sure that their water and food recepticals are kept clean each and every day. It is no good cleaning all of the parrots equipment if when doing so the owner has dirty hands themselves as this somewhat defeats the point. When it comes to a parrots cage, the parrot should be able to happily spread its wings fully within the birdcage as well as house at least one perch and various toys.

Parrots can often form very strong bonds with their human owners and families and generally speaking, smaller parrots can live up to 15 to 30 years of age and their larger cousins can often live well past their 60's, so parrot ownership can mean a lifelong commitment. A lot of parrot owners like to clip their parrots wings on a regular basis and opposite to popular belief the parrot can still fly but they are limited and it is often done for the saftey of the parrot.

9 things that you don’t know about parrots

1. Parrots need daily contact with their owners. – Some kinds need more care and attention than others. Cockatoo, Lorry and Jacob need special care every day. Amazons, Budgie, Conures small Africans parrots need also (though not that much) their owners’ daily attention for keeping up their spiritual tone and socializing.

5. Birds love to make a mess all around them. – They have their very important place in the wild world because their main function is to “afforest” the wood. 6. Parrots need to take bath regularly. – The origin of most of them coming from the rainforests where they take a shower app. 3 times a week, no matter if they want it or not. The clean water they use is very important for their feathers. Some of them prefer taking a bath under the shower with us, others – to be splashed with water (for example with sprinkler for bedewing flowers) or to be placed under the stream of water in the sink. Often they also prefer taking a bath in a bowl filled with water. You should try each of these methods until you find the preferred way of your parrot for taking a bath.

7. Parrots like to destroy things. – In their natural environment they spend 90% of their day searching for and consuming food. Living in our homes they receive their food without making any effort which results in some need inside them to “rediscover” and fulfil their time, which normally they spend in searching for food. If you don’t provide them regularly with different bird toys they could start to use your furniture for that purpose. Parrot toys are made specially to be ruined. If the toy cannot be destroyed in that point, there is possibility the bird might not be interested in it. It’s recommended to replace the toy with a different one periodically, to avoid the parrot to get bored.

8. The parrots bite. – Sometimes they bite the hand that feeds them and the people they are familiarized with. This is not like a dog’s bite. It’s true, they bite in some cases because of aggression but more often it is a result of fear or anger. Sometimes as a part of their daily communication, they “bite” each other and expect their natural behaviour to be tolerated by us. Biting is one of their means of communication which makes many people feel themselves hurt and ignored by their pets. To state that simply: birds have an ability to communicate perfectly. By biting they say simply: “I don’t like that” and this way of their expression is so effective. People often are not that honest and convicting and tend to be resentful, when someone else or even a bird is more honest in its attitude than us.

9. The parrots are not appropriate pets for kids. – They are not good choice for kid’s pets because of their incredible intellect. They live long and require daily attention and contact with their “human flock”. A kid goes through a lot of changes and phases of his/her style of living (school, marriage, building a family, moving etc.) which makes it almost impossible to keep a life-long relationship with such an intelligent creature as a pet.

Will an Amazon parrot intentionally hurt or kill a smaller bird?

I have a female Amazon and a male parakeet (in separate cages, of course). The keet really seems to like the amazon and always wants to be around her when he's out of his cage. He'll fly onto the amazon's cage, or sit next to her if they're both on the bird play gym at the same time. The Amazon, though, will open her beak and lean toward the keet, which is when I step in to separate the two. It seems the keet looks at the bigger Amazon like a buddy, but the amazon views the keet as a potential snack. The Amazon doesn't growl at the smaller bird and for the most part will move away from the little guy when he walks over to her on the gym. He doesn't seem to understand she's a lot bigger and her beak can do major damage. What are the chances the Amazon will finally accept the keet as a little friend?

Maybe never, so you should always supervise. Birds are very territorial. I wouldn't dare leave my Cockatoo, loving as she is alone with my macaws,. One good bit and she'd be dead. I also had an amazon. He and my conure were best of friends, so it is possible. . But I wouldn't dare leave them unsupervised, untill you're sure. Birds are very territorilal. They need their own space, room, whatever. I wouldn't dare let my lovebirds fly into the macaws cage, although they loved to, just to steal their newspapers and shred them for nesting material. Tiny as they are, the macaws still see them as invading their territory and will bite, not realizing they will kill them.. But it is possible they will become friends as my Amazon and conure were. But please supervise them first to make sure. And make sure they both get equal love and attention from you so there's no jealousy. Parrots are like little kids in that respect. They are extremely jealous and possessive of their owner. As long as your Amazon feels that it's number one, it should work out okay.

Parrot cages need to be the correct size for these reasons

Firstly a parrot that has space is a happy parrot that is why size is important, they tend to get depressed and cranky in a small cage.

The bigger you go the better it will be, aslong as spacing in between each bars is small enough to prevent injury in the event your parrot tries to escape.So make sure the birds head can not fit in between the bars.

The door must have anough space to fit your hand in comforably to not only catch him, but to put him back in his cage.

Bird Canary Cockatiel

Just found a canary. . what do I do?

My dad found a canary outside before and since its winter in Australia we brought it inside and laid out some newspaper near the heater and put a basket over the top so it can't fly away. I have never owned a canary before and only ever owned a bird once (a cockatiel but it passed away from ilness 18 months ago) and I have no idea what to feed it? I have crushed up cereal and a leaf of baby spinach for it at the moment because from memmory those are okay for birds. My grandmother is letting us have a spare cage and some bird seed of hers to keep it in until we figure out if we want to keep it and some Also is there any way of knowing if its a boy or a girl?

Most websires say there is no way to tell the difference between a boy and a girl except that boys sing. But this canary is very quiet. Not sure if thats because it's not comfortable with its new cage yet or if it's a hen.

You seem to have the food requirements--don't forget cuttle bone or pulverized baked (to sterilize) eggshells. I have bought canaries in the past and it can take anywhere from the first day up to 2 weeks for a male canary to resume singing after being moved. Anything after 2 weeks, odds are it's a female. Canaries in the wild are not flocking birds and do not pair up, only for mating purposes. The same holds true for pet canaries. All male canaries have the inherited ability to sing. So, just wait a couple of weeks max and you will know if your bird is a male. By-the-way, domestic canaries don't play with bird toys and they don't migrate.
