I just got a 29 gallon Bio Cube Aquarium and the filter is not working. I turn it on it it looks like it is working but the water level in the maximum minimum area goes down and never pumps it through. I have fish that are going to die. I put the pump in the way the directions say and then did if a different way just in case. Anyone have any ideas? Please help.
How do I prime the pump?
Already tried that Turtle. Didn't work.

end of tenancy cleaning..how long would it take a professional cleaner to clean a 2 bedroomed apartment?

It is coming up to the end of my tenancy and can anyone give me an idea of how long it would take a professional cleaner to come in and clean a well kept 2 bedroomed apartment. 3 hours ??? 4 hours?? Longer?? Anyone had any experience with this kind of thing?? The flat is in reasonable condition, it just needs a professional touch.

Are women crazy? Or Obsessive-compulsive toxic cleaner/cleaning disorder (OTCD)

Women do over 90% of the cleaning. Unless you've being living in a cave for the last hundred years, everyone knows that toxic cleaners at home, were where we work and were where we play are causing cancer, mutating your kids and doing strange things to the male reproductive organ system. Obviously, we should stop using them, so why don't we? We're not addicted to them like cigarettes. Or are we? Let's find out.

Let's start with the problem. Consider how serious problem toxic cleaners are. According to the EPA, (Environmental Protection Agency) "50% of all illness comes from "poor indoor air quality". The largest most serious forms of toxins you're exposed to in the home are cleaners. A recent study showed that "women who stay at home have a 54% higher rate of cancer then women in the work force." When you consider the implications of these studies, you would think that politicians would be banning the stuff tomorrow and that your doctor would demand on every visit that you remove them from your home and work. I would love to do a study to find out how many $$$ billions are lost to sick days and increased medical costs.

A quick view search in Wikipedia shows informs us that "psychological dependency on such things as gambling, food, sex, pornography, computers, work, exercise, spiritual obsession (as opposed to religious devotion), cutting and shopping" count as 'addictions' as well, and cause guilt, shame, fear, hopelessness, failure, rejection, anxiety, or humiliation; symptoms associated with, among other medical conditions, depression and epilepsy." "Although, the above mentioned are things or tasks which, when used or performed, do not fit into the traditional view of addiction and may be better defined as an obsessive-compulsive disorder."

If we take the lesser evil and call it "obsessive-compulsive toxic cleaner/cleaning disorder" I think we can start to shed some light on why people don't ban toxic cleaners from their homes and workplaces. This is not to be confused with obsessive-compulsive cleaning disorder which in my opinion is not necessarily a bad thing considering I sell cleaning products. However, the need to spray poison all around our homes and other buildings is an amazing piece of brainwashing considering that the person actually thinks that they are making things cleaner. Every other living creature runs from the smell of bleach yet the constant use of guilt, shame, fear, hopelessness, failure, rejection, anxiety, and humiliation used in advertising over generations has managed to completely override our natural instincts. Even mothers that are confirmed "green" home makers find themselves guilty of spraying anti-bacterial products around the home when the supposed flu season arrives to protect their kids.

Please consider this fact; if you spray poison on anything, it's dirty, not clean. Most homes and buildings are coated on a daily basis with poison. Does anyone see this as a problem?

When you study how the brainwashing is accomplished you start to see some interesting constants. The first is the ads are always framed in what seems a positive manner, yet they always use reverse psychology by subtly implying that if you don't do it the way they are showing something is wrong with you. You're a bad mother; you don't know how to do laundry, etc. Mostly they are targeted at women as they do most of the cleaning.

Secondly, the advertisers never show you proof that the product actually works, just the suggestion that it's new and improved and therefore works better then the last stuff. Some products work a little bit on one thing yet not on another. This way they keep you buying more and more products and then they change the labels and you start over again. Every cleaning cupboard is filled with multiple failed toxic cleaning experiments, just look in your own. I don't know about you, but I would go nuts, too, if I could never get what I want.

Thirdly, the brainwashing has convinced almost everyone that they are experts on cleaning and know exactly how to do it. Having watched thousands of people clean, I'm always amazed when people spray something and immediately start scrubbing. The ads have trained people that this is the way to clean when in fact, logically, a person should spray something and wait to let the cleaner do the work. To counter this constant advertising-programmed behaviour, I train our sales people to spray the surface and create a distraction to get the psycho scrubber away from the surface so the cleaner can get the proper dwell time.

Consider how powerful this brain washing is; if you were to tell almost any woman that they don't know how to clean you would be lucky to just get just an angry look. The truth is most people don't have the first clue about how cleaners work and the big toxic chemical pushers like it that way. It's far more profitable to have ignorant clients suffering from obsessive-compulsive toxic cleaner/cleaning disorder then to show them how to get great cleaning results, save money and avoid the toxic side effects.

the light i have rite now is a 75 watt and it emmits like a goldish color...ive heard white is better and where do i find one and how do i know if its a white light?does the box say if its a white light?

Actually, they need a basking light that emits UVB rays which are absolutely essential for their health. The best ones can be found here: http://www.reptileuv.com/ as long as you don't get too powerful of one. You also need a thermometer to make sure their basking area is in the range of 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nitrogen Cycle question: Am I just an idiot?

I'm cycling a new 10-gallon aquarium. I put in some fish food wrapped in an old nylon to generate ammonia two days ago, but didn't get any reading today when I tested for ammonia.

Then I realized my filter was on. It takes cartridges... does that mean it's likely filtering out the ammonia before any bacteria can grow and metabolize it?

If that's what's happening, how will my tank ever grow a biofilter? And if that's not a problem because of the filter removing ammonia before it harms the fish, then can I just go ahead and put in fish despite not having completed a nitrogen cycle?

You should add a filter cartridge, to provide a place for the bacteria to grow, but that's not the problem. But the filter doesn't remove ammonia, so that's not what's happening.

I would add a little more fish food, and see what happens. I know of people who start their cycle using pure ammonia, so that may be the route to go with you.

Do you have live plants in the tank? Some live plants, like hornwort, metabolize ammonia, but not enough to keep the levels at zero for long, especially not once fish are added. I would say keep doing what you are doing, give it time, and maybe step it up to a bit of pure ammonia.

Changing gravel in aquarium... without throwing tank into cycle again...?

I would like to change it to black... but the question is... how to do it, without harming the inhabitants of the tank?

Here's my one idea... but if you think you have a better suggestion, please don't hesitate to voice it!

Scoop up 1/4 of it, and place nylon stockings containing equivilant amounts of new gravel in the tank, wait a week and repeat until all red gravel is gone and then dump black out of stockings.

Other than that... I'm at a loss. I just don't want to throw the tank into a cycle again.

I like where your head is, but I think you should reverse your idea. Instead of scooping up 1/4 and replacing as you go, I would scoop up all the red gravel and put it in the stockings. But here's the thing: as you are scooping, swirl the gravel around and make all the bacterial clusters and dirt swirl and get suspended in the water. That way you're scooping out a minimal amount of that on the red and when you're done scooping you should have a nice, beautiful, disgusting layer on the bottom of your tank and floating in the water.

THEN add your new gravel and whatever filter system that you are using will put the dirty mess under the black rocks a few hours later.

You can also put some of your red gravel into the media part of a hang-over filter if you have it (only big pebbles though, the little ones can get sucked up into your impeller). I have done this instead of the stocking idea, but I think if you just have your stockings filled with red gravel it would be the same idea as putting it in your filter.

The best thing to do though no matter what you do is once you have taken your gravel out whichever way you choose, increase the amount of times you feed your fish. I DO NOT mean overfeed, thats when you feed too much for them to eat at one sitting. Say you only feed them once or twice a day, feed them 4 or 5 times so they will poop more and the cycling process will take less time (few people do this thinking that they can't control cycling, but you can depending on how much you give the nitro bacteria to work with).

I would drop the temperature a little too, while you're replacing the gravel. Colder water holds more oxygen than warmer water thereby giving your bacteria a greater hold on faster growth.

You can also buy Cycle, thats pretty good to use. Whatever you do though, don't change your water for at least 2 or 3 weeks after you do this, just to be safe.
