IM SERIOUS WHAT IS CORAL?????? I thought it was a plant but the fish store says they are agressive?????

Corals are an "attached" animal, at least in the adult stage. The larvae (when they reproduce sexually) are free-swimming.

They are capable of stinging, as well as producing chemicals to keep other corals from growing too close (this prevents competition for food and sunlight, because most corals have a photosynthetic algae within them which produces part of their food supply.

Besides aggression, you also need to know something about feeding, water flow preferences (strong, light, or moderate), lighting needs, etc.

Some have soft bodies and others build an internal calcium skeleton. Soft corals are generally easier to keep, especially the "mushrooms".

There are entire books written about keeping corals, so there's way too much info to go into any great detail here. Raising Coral In Saltwater Aquariums - Great Tips And Advice

Many people are very passionate about making their home aquarium look like a piece of the ocean that has been transplanted in their homes. Some people will take pains in cultivating their aquarium themselves while some will just like to go out and buy their whole kit, tank, filter, lighting plants fish and all. This may be an easier way to create a good aquarium, however, the fun way is to start with the basics and grow your own fish and plants.

Some people are pretty good at breeding their own fish and have formed groups where they can exchange their home grown aquarium plants, fish and coral as well. There is a certain joy in seeing your efforts take definate shape in the form of aquetic plants and marine life.

Attempting to start a reef in your aquarium is not the sort of advice gurus will dole out to beginers in this hobby. One is advised to start with a small aquarium that houses fish only. Once you have a few months of experience in caring for the fish in the aquarium you can move on to trying your hand at breeding fish, then plants in the aquarium. After about a year you will be rady to try your hand at growing coral in the tank.

Before you rush out to get yourself some coral reef for the tank, remember that you are not just placing a piece of rock to your aquarium. These are actually called Polyps and are tiny invertibrate living organisms. The existance of these polyps in your saltwater tank depends on your ability to provide proper lighting, food and salt water.

In order for the coral reef to survive you must provide good saltwater to the tank at regular intervals. If you change the water abruptly you are likely to send your polyps into a state of shock and ultimately lose them. You will know the coral is in trouble by the discoloring of the reef. In addition you must be able to provide a proper pump to produce a strong current in the water as this is very important for the coral's survival.

You must never forget that corals are living organisms and require food. Many people of the wrong belief that corals feed like other plants in the water, on photosynthesis. Nothing could be further from the truth. Corals need to be fed, like the other fish in the aquarium, at least 3 times a week. Frozen food is best for coral reef in the tank. Any coral food purchased from the pet store that has been open for more than 5 months must be discarded. Liquid or bottled food is available from the pet store and is best suited for the coral as they do not dirty the aquarium.

Believe it or not large polyps feed on pieces of minced meat! What do you know - from plants to carnivores! However, remember if the polyps are too small they will starve because the large pieces og minced meat will not be of any use to them. So stick to the prepared food from the pet store.

If you have done your research and have a good supply of nutrients from the store you will have your coral reef in your living room in no time at all.

Where can I find a good, cheap cat tree/ cat condo?

I am getting a cat soon and I would like to know where I can find a cheap playhouse/scratching post. She will be an indoor only cat (with the exception of being on a leash outside) so I need to provide her with plenty of stimulation, scratching posts, toys, and safe things to climb on. Where can I find or make these things for cheap?

PetEdge and Drs. Foster Smith online both have some really cute cat trees that are well priced. Shipping's a bit high but they still end up being substantially cheaper than buying one at PetSmart or Petco whose prices are pretty ridiculous.

I have four cats and I don't have a cat tree. I have two scratching posts and a couple of sisal scratchers that hang on door knobs. So you don't necessarily have to get them the big tree to scratch on. Those take up a lot of space.

I agree that cats do love to scratch different surfaces. Here are some pros and cons of both.
2nd one
Pros:
1. different surfaces to scratch
2. less carpet to be destroyed with scratching
3. guaranteed to get it because more in stock
4. Lots of excitement and playing possibilities for kittens (the dangling things)
5. Not as tall, so may be better for lower ceilings; i.e. apartment, small/old house.
Cons:
1. Depending on the color of your kittens fur, it will show and collect, but it will do that on both.
2, May be hard for a 6 month old kitten to climb!
3. Not much space for multiple cats
4. Not as neutral, so won't go with as many designs and color palates.

1st one:
Pros:
1. Lots of space for multiple cats, so they have their own little territories.
2. Easier to climb because of stairs!
3. Scratching posts.
4. Lots of different holes for the little kitten to pop his/her head out of. (fun for kittens)
5. Lots of places for the kitten to explore and sleep.
6. Neutral color that will go with any design in your house or apartment.
Cons:
1. Very tall and wide, so you need a lot of space.
2. Almost out of stock.

As you can see, it really depends on your situation, but I hope that my lists helped.

keeping ferrets outside?

my ferrets are going outside soon and i am buying a 6'x4' shed. will that be big enough? here is what i want in for them and any suggestions of what i can have or that isn't safe for them please will be fab =]

lots of nest boxes
hammock
cat dome
cat scratcher
dig box with dirt
large bowl
food bowl
blankets
toys
plant pot
another ferret lol =]
light so i can go in with them at all hours
a ferret heater for the winter
a fan attached to the top corner for the summer
large litter box
puppy fluffy bed

large carboard pipe (it's their favourite toy lol)
their toy box (yes they have a toy box =])
and my uncle is building them a run to attach to the shed another 6'x4'

It sounds like you are building a palace for your ferrets ) I am not sure what the weather is like where you live but you should not need a heater for the winter or a fan for the summer ... they can cope. Just make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink in the summer and they will shelter in their nest box in the winter. Put lots of straw in there for their comfort and they should be fine. I feel sure you will take great care of them.

Tree Cavity Care

Tree Cavity Care or "What's that hole in my tree trunk?"

A tree cavity is a hole in a trunk or branch of a tree. A cavity is caused by damage to the bark or woody tissue of the tree. The wound can result from a pruning cut, mechanical injury caused by machinery, storm damage, dead limbs that decay into the trunk, or any injury that damages the tree. When a tree loses the bark it opens up the tree to infection or decay similar to a wound to our skin or damage to the enamel on our teeth.

Trees cannot heal the way people do but rely on compartmentalization to keep the decay from spreading, (Alex Shigo, 1986). Trees use chemical barriers to stop decay by forming a compartment to prevent its movement. This is why cutting boards made of wood have been found to be more effective against eliminating bacteria. A study in California found that families using wooden cutting boards were half as likely to develop salmonella exposure as families using plastic cutting boards. (P.K. Kass, 1992).

Previously, it was believed that cavities should be filled with cement or other fill material. For the past few decades this practice has been discouraged. Filling cavities has been found to offer no benefits to reducing decay or providing structural support for trees with cavities. The only benefit to filling a tree cavity is cosmetic.

One instance where filling a cavity may be advisable is to prevent honey bees from making a nest in a trunk or limb of a tree. The preferred method to filling a cavity is to use expandable foam formed just below the wound or callus roll. The callus roll is the tissue that trees develop to close over the wound. Once the cavity is filled with foam a layer of bondo or automobile body filler should be applied to preserve the foam. Finally a coating of spray paint should be applied to protect the body filler from exposure to the elements. Remember filling cavities is a cosmetic measure at best.

What is the best website to purchase quality cat furniture that's not too pricey?

Looking mainly for a great cat tree, cat condo, or cat gym that's around 5 feet high.

Drsfosterandsmith.com. They are still expensive (all cat trees are) but a whole lot cheaper than the competitors. They also offer a lot more different selections. Or, for even cheaper, I bought a cat tree that goes to the ceiling for 35 dollars at Wal-mart. It's nothing special though.
