Alternative flea/ tick protection?

I'm not particularly into holistic stuff, but the thought of putting a poisonous collar around my dog's neck 24/7 worries me. Are there any non-toxic/ natural tick/ flea deterrents that you can recommend? Thanks!
If my doctor wanted to prescribe a medication that had a disclaimer on it warning me it was harmful to aquatic life and small animals, I would absolutely question it! Wouldn't you? 99% is a good statistic, but where did that come from? Through independent research, or from the marketing folks? Many doctors have relationships with various pharmaceutical companies, meaning they prescribe a particular treatment over another, and so perhaps end up prescribing something to their patients which is not 100% in their best interests: therefore, I presume vets to be no different. That is why I posted my question here. I wanted to see what fellow dog owners on this forum have used.

I would actually advise you to stay away from flea collars. They are only effective for about 1 inch above the collar and 1 inch below the collar. Pretty much a waste of your money!!

I know you had mentioned not wanting to use any chemicals. I can confidently tell you that out of all the flea/tick topicals, Frontline Plus and Advantage is safest. K9 Advantix is not recommended for pet owners who own cats. It's main active ingrediant has been linked to many feline deaths. All it takes is your cat licking/grooming the area on your dog you applied the Advantix.

As far as I know, there is not a holistic flea/tick preventative. Dawn or Joy detergent does work in getting rid of fleas when bathing, however it will not prevent them and too much bathing can cause skin issues. Whatever you do, do NOT give your dog any Garlic. People love recommending Garlic for flea/ticks on here. Garlic is quite toxic to canines.

UPDATE: Sadly, there are those few vet practices which will only sell a certain product based on the relationship with the company. For example, different companies that make medications will give vets grants to do research, money for better equipment, or even big discounts on the product. This topic gets me so upset!

Thank goodness I work for a clinic that is honest and will only sell products based on effectiveness, scientific research, and satisfaction. I would never work for a vet that based decisions on how much profit the product brought in or what new upgrades could be made to equipment.

Personally, I use Frontline Plus.
